Major metro home prices

19 members have voted

  1. 1. If you live in a major metropolitan area, do you believe home prices in your area are reasonable?

    • Yes
    • No - prices are too low
    • No - prices are too high
    • I do not live in a major metropolitan area
  2. 2. If you're a home owner in a major metropolitan area, would you rather see a significant (10-50%) reduction in home prices in your area or a continuation of the housing recession?

    • I'd rather have the housing recession continue than lose any more equity
    • I'd rather see a healthy housing market even if that means I lose equity
    • I am not a homeowner in a major metropolitan area
  3. 3. If you are not a homeowner in a major metropolitan area, why not?

    • I don't want to own a home
    • I don't want to live in a major metropolitan area
    • I'm priced out of the housing market in the metropolitan area nearest my current place of residence
    • I do not desire things, for desire is the root of all suffering
    • I am a homeowner in a major metropolitan area

Resort area sounds interesting.

If one thought about it, resort living could be lucrative. Tourists make me money, but they also clog up the roads. If you managed to work it out so that you could make all your money renting out the place in the season, and live there in the off season. For instance, own a unit in the mountains near a ski resort, and another along the coast. When the income property is not making money, you live there, while the other property is in season. Some of those weekly rentals could be mighty expensive.

I live in the LA area so yeah house prices are crazy here.. if you want a nice house that you can afford you have to move out to the boonies and live in one of those cookie cutter neighborhoods with I dislike and drive an hour or more to work...

I am content with renting for now.... I would really like to move to Northern California though.. you can get a nice house there for way cheaper then you can get here...

Nope. No more SoCal transport please. :P

LA is insane. I can't believe it, but some of those folks commute a couple hours or more, each way. They do it up here too. Imagine living in Lake or Mendocino counties, where the prices are almost reasonable, and commuting to SF or San Jose, four or five days a week.

There's a guy at work who commutes from Rockland County NY to Somerset County NJ every day. If you google that you'll see how crazy it is.

right now the hubster has about a 15 to 20 minutes commute.. he says some of the guys he works with live part time close to Bakersfield that would be at least a 2 hour or more commute

  1. "Reasonable" prices in DC-metro area?:rofl: unless you live in Fredericksburg or Manassas
  2. We rent an apartment (in DC-metro area), so not homeowner
  3. We are looking towards buying a home (resigned to the nasty prices), probably around Herndon where the houses are a little nicer for the nasty price than closer-in such as Falls Church

Fredericksburg is faaaaaaaar from downtown tho

why resign yourself to taking on unreasonable amount of debt? is home ownership that important or beneficial?

eta. -- my apologies if you plan to buy with cash in which case my point about debt does not apply.

Hang on, both interest rates and housing prices are low right now. Why not take it on now? Do you think the residential housing market is going to crash again? I expect the commercial market to adjust, but not necessarily the residential.

I'm the only one who picked too low so far. That is because we already own our home and the prices have crashed down here a lot. The prices are possibly even lower than they were *before* the boom. It is ruining our home values. For someone who wanted to buy right now here, they would get an awesome deal. But I don't find the prices reasonable-they are driving down all values. If anyone wants to move here you can get a nice 3-4 bedroom house for under 100K I believe. Grrr.

The benefits of it are:
  • equity-building
  • some tax (mortgage-interest) deductions
  • ability to grow some of the crops (gonkura, mint, methi, tomatoes) that we like
