Major metro home prices

  1. 1. If you live in a major metropolitan area, do you believe home prices in your area are reasonable?

    • Yes
    • No - prices are too low
    • No - prices are too high
    • I do not live in a major metropolitan area
  2. 2. If you're a home owner in a major metropolitan area, would you rather see a significant (10-50%) reduction in home prices in your area or a continuation of the housing recession?

    • I'd rather have the housing recession continue than lose any more equity
    • I'd rather see a healthy housing market even if that means I lose equity
    • I am not a homeowner in a major metropolitan area
  3. 3. If you are not a homeowner in a major metropolitan area, why not?

    • I don't want to own a home
    • I don't want to live in a major metropolitan area
    • I'm priced out of the housing market in the metropolitan area nearest my current place of residence
    • I do not desire things, for desire is the root of all suffering
    • I am a homeowner in a major metropolitan area

According to one thing I found, my county is still within the Tampa Bay metro area. But I don't think I'm in a major metro area, am I?

Feel free to use US Census definitions of metropolitan area - http://www.census.gov/population/www/metroareas/lists/2008/List4.txt

But if you wish to make that determination subjectively and just exercise your opinion... that's ok too.

OK, well it says my county is part of the Tampa-St Pete-Clearwater metro area. But my city is not as dense as those places. I'll answer anyway. :P:whistle:

I live in a resort area, within a couple hours drive of two major metropolitan areas: Sacramento and San Francisco. We get to spread out here a bit in the west.

Looking at your list, I live close to Santa Rosa-Petaluma, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area, but this is all unicorporated area where I own a home.

The list is by the US Census. It's just there if you choose to use it. Thanks for your input.

Resort area sounds interesting.

Houston is mundo freaking cheap compared to Toronto. I couldn't believe the housing prices here when I moved. Yet, for renting, it really isn't all that much cheaper - I found the rental market in Toronto to be underpriced (renting a house there is significantly less than a mortgage payment). We are not ready to own here because we have an idea that life will take us elsewhere...plus I got tired of all the work that goes into owning/maintaining a home back in Canada.

Ditto as Val. We live in cheepo Houston and do not plan on buying a house because I am sure that I will get transfered to another country sometime in the next few years. If we ever plan on owning a house, it will be a custom built home sometime before we retire, so that we have plenty of time to maintain the house.

Tell us more about this idea.

Hubby has a very popular sports talk show here, and we may pursue opportunities elsewhere if they make sense (ie: pay us a sh1tload of money and get him more exposure). Or, if we win the lottery, we are going to buy condos in Houston, Las Vegas, Toronto, and Santa Anita, and a cabin at Clearwater Lake, and split our times between them according to the weather and poker events.

Until recently I would have said that I don't want to own a home. Now, it's that we can't afford the type of home I would want. We could buy something for $300K in a not so nice area or live in a shoebox in a nicer area, but what I'd really want is closer to $500K and we can't afford that yet.

I'm starting to get irritated with renting. All of the "luxury" communities have section 8 and things are going downhill, which is why I'm starting to think about buying. Hubby sees us moving abroad within the next 5 years so is reluctant to buy.

Yeah, I own in a townhouse/condo community and in the recent downturn a lot of owners have turned their properties over to the county as low-income rentals. The effect on the community so far has been negligible as the people moving in (again, so far) have been good. Mostly single mothers with kids. But all it takes is one bad tenant and that day will come. My wife and I both like homes in the same price range (upper 400s) but she likes them in areas more than hour away (newer with a lot more square footage) while I like them closer to work (so much smaller and older). The problem with anything in that price range, of course, is that we'd have to move away from our current system where my paycheck alone pays for everything and hers gets stashed under the mattress. At that price range we'd be stretched a lot thinner, saving a lot less. Is it worth it? I am skeptical.

I would stay in a old/smaller & nicer neighborhood. Suburbs are really overrated and, IMO no amount of square footage can compensate for the hours you spend commuting.

This is all suburb. I don't live or work anywhere near "the city" (NYC). The debate is between a suburb closer to my suburban workplace or a suburb further away.

FWIW the suburb further away is a nicer neighborhood. Not much lower-income residents there (yet).
