Will one need a marriage certificate from a previous marriage during their interview for a K1 visa? She has the divorce certificate, and is not sure if she will need to take a copy of the previous marriage certificate along.

Thanks

In the UK you don't get your marriage certificate back when you file for divorce, so it's not possible to have it for the interview. As far as I'm aware the divorce certificate (decree) needs to be the original or a certified copy. Hope this helps!

Glad i read this post!..Although we still have plenty of time as we just sent out our p3 last week to Montreal. I asked my lawyer for the original divorce decree and her office said they dont even get an original...it stays in Fredericton - where filed. I have a copy also I have a copy of the div certificate; however i believe i can send away for an original. Does anyone know if my lawyers office knows what they are talking about...that i cannot get an original of the decree?

also- is there a thread for interviews coming up as there is for when we filed the i-129f?

Thanks a bunch!

I was able to obtain my divorce certificate from the local court house. It was a certified copy issued by and bearing the seal of the court. We had no issues at all. Good luck!

I think the issue is they are asking for a copy of the marriage certificate. In some countries you turn in your marriage certificate when you apply for a divorce.

not unless the marriage certificate changed her name, then you will need it to show the progression of her name from A to B

What if the divorce decree officially states that my name is changed back to my maiden name? None of my other documents or pieces of evidence use my old married name, so is the divorce decree enough in this case? Or would I still need the first marriage certificate? I have a photocopy, but I definitely don't have any originals/certified copies. Thanks for any help!

Well that changes your name from B to A but you still have not proved A to B. You may wish to mosey on over to the UK regional forum and ask your fellow mates there. They will know the specifics that the London consulate requires

Birth, Adoption, Marriage, and Death Certificates

* England and Wales (including Scilly Isles and Isle of Wight): Available. Certificates of births, adoptions, deaths and marriages may be obtained from the General Register Office, Smedley Hydro, Trafalgar Road, Southport, Merseyside PR8 2HH, or from the local registrar's office in the district in which the birth, death or marriage was originally registered. Long-form birth certificates should be requested, as short-form birth certificates do not contain the parents’ names.

* Scotland: Available. Certificates of births, deaths, marriages and The Adopted Children's Register may be obtained from the Registrar General, New Register House, Edinburgh EH1 3YT, or from the Registrar's Office for the district in which the event occurred. Long-form birth certificates should be obtained as short-form certificates do not contain parents' names.

* Northern Ireland: Available. Certificates of births, adoptions, deaths and marriages may be obtained from the Registrar General's Office, Oxford House, 49-65 Chichester Street, Belfast BT1 4UY or if registered before January 1, 1922, from the Registrar General, Dublin, Eire. Marriage certificates may also be obtained from the local registration office for the district in which the marriage was originally registered. Long-form birth certificates should be obtained as short-form birth certificates do not contain the parents' names.

* Jersey: Available. Apply to: Superintendent Register, States Office, Royal Square, St. Helier, Jersey.

* Guernsey, Sark, and Alderney: Available. Apply to: Registrar General's Office, Greffe, Guernsey.

* Isle of Man: Available. Apply to Registrar General, General Registry Building, Douglas, Isle of Man.

I was answering the post I quoted asking about divorce certificates not the original question. Sorry for the confusion :)

My name is very unique so there shouldn't be a question that it's the same person, but of course that is not proof in itself.

Instead of submitting my old marriage certificate, could I send copies of my old passports or my old social security cards (which are dated) that show the progression of my name change??

My old marriage certificate is actually in Mexico (and I don't speak very good Spanish!) so that's why I'm hesitant to bother getting another one and having to get it translated.

They are not looking for proof of the progression, they are looking for the document that legally made the change....
