Sounds like a vast conspiracy to me! BP never said that, their website was hacked to further the conspiracy!

It's hilarious to me how much in denial the VJ brits are. The finger pointing at Halliburton is hilarious too, as if they've missed how loathed that company is by Americans

The facts are that this was an accident - the reality is it's not an easy accident to fix - the cap is not the solution but a sticking plaster until the real solution is implemented. All this guff about fake pictures blah blah, I don't care as long as they are working to fix the problem, which they are - they will succeed and despite all the ####### and political spin they are trying to fix it, not simply saying they are and that's what is important.

Yeah, that's what it is ;)

You'd care if the perps were American.

I care anyway, it's a crappy situation and I don't want the oceans polluted beyond recognition by anyone or anything but that doesn't blind me to reality, and the reality is that solutions are being sought, that's all there is.

And BP is doctoring pictures on its website. That's reality too.

I don't think it's as simple as "fake pictures". This is an indication that BP is willing to do whatever it takes to repair their image. If deceiving the public just happens to be necessary, than so be it. I'm not sure how you can defend this company. Yes, accidents happen. But accidents are preventable, and when the consequences of an accident can be as devastating as this one, we had better demand a bit more due diligence, eh? Clearly BP did not and perhaps they should be crucified over it so it is less likely to happen again. Are there other who should share the blame with BP regarding the oil spill? Yes. That has been discussed ad nauseam though, and my topic deals with something else.

Demand more diligence? Is that a govmint prerogative or are capitalist companies meant to self police in the public interest? I am not defending anything, but I am not falling for any fake politically driven outrage, thanks all the same.

Of course they want to repair their image, and of course they will go to great lengths to do so - but the 'fake photos' are not that important - the only thing that is important is whether or not they are working diligently to solve the problem, which I believe they are - I could be wrong of course.

My point is, so what? I don't really care. I would care if I believed that they were not taking this seriously, and not making every effort to find a solution. That it should never have happened, well sure but hey, I am not a big user of gas so...

No politically driven outrage here. You might be reading too much into my response. I'm not that deep.

The people that 'out' this kind of story are driven by politics, not by a demand for a better society or cleaner oceans or less pollution or better use of resources. BP is not shirking its responsibilities in this instance - it probably did in terms of that the accident occurred at all, but that's really not at issue with these pictures.

That sounds like a generalization - I'm not sure you can be sure that is true in this case. Perhaps it is true though. Regardless, facts are facts and I'm not too pleased with this "news", among other things, and I can assure you politics plays no part in my reaction. I guess I'm a bit peeved that they think this sort of thing is necessary or that this deserved a spot high on their priority list given their other, obviously more important responsibilities.. Perhaps they are out of touch with reality.

No, I am not sure, but there are indications that this is true - there is a lot of grandstanding surrounding this situation - not least from the US government. However, in this instance the company involved is relatively responsible - perhaps because the affected area is US soil - or rather US ocean. Such can not be said of other, far more tragic industrial accidents. Try Bopal for size.

What is most 'upsetting' for me, is that none of this will change how people view their cars - the demand for cheap oil drives these types of accidents more than anything else, but really, will people change in order to improve their environment? No, they'll just whine and moan about BP and how 'irresponsible' they were, blah blah blah. If Americans paid a more realistic price for gas, then I might have some sympathy, as things stands, sorry not so much.
