I don't think the woman should have been fired, but it would have made sense if the incident had come to light 24 years ago that she be fired (or at least disciplined) at the time of the incident. No employer is going to look at an admission of racism by a current employee and say "well that's ok, because you learned your lesson and it all worked out for the best". You'd expect to be fired, I imagine the woman would have expect to be fired.

You wouldn't expect to be fired over a quarter of a century later for something you did in a completely different job.
