Stolen green card recovered

My wife's purse was stolen last month, along with her green card. But only a couple weeks after we forked out the $380 for a new one, her musty wallet arrived in the mail. We don't expect to get our $380 back, but because the new green card hasn't arrived yet, my wife is wondering if the old one is still valid. When applying for a job, it probably doesn't matter. But if we travel back to Thailand for a few months, can she use the old one when re-entering the USA? Or would that set off alarm bells and she be assumed an impostor?

I ran into something similar with my passport. I lost my passport, got a new one, and then found the old one. When returning from Thailand last time, I wanted to use the old one, since I only had about a half page left for stamps when returning to the US. They knew right away that my old one had been replaced via the computer. They confiscated my old one and gave me a little static about it. I would assume they would treat green cards the same way.
