  • Rhetoric and reaction escalate in the NAACP Tea Party debate today.
  • Last week the NAACP passed a resolution condemning extremist elements within the Tea Party and asked Tea Party leaders to speak out against racist language among their members.
  • The NAACP based their resolution on the activities of some segments of the Tea Party who have engaged in racial slurs & images. There are reports of some Tea Party members also using anti-gay language in their gatherings and one individual actually spitting on Congressman Emmanuel Cleaver during one event.
  • As word of the resolution, which has not been approved yet by the NAACP Board of Directors, has been reported in the press, many Tea Party supporters have reacted with angry rhetoric – interpreting the resolution as a condemnation of the entire Tea Party movement.
  • While early reaction from the Tea Party was perceived as defensive, today the Party has finally moved to address some racial rhetoric within their group.
  • It was reported today on CBS that Mark Williams, a conservative commentator and leader of the Tea Party Express movement, has been expelled from the movement by the National Tea Party Federation. The Federation is the umbrella organization that represents the movement in the US.
  • They reacted to a racist blog written by Williams in response to the NAACP’s resolution. The blog was intended to be a satiric, fictional letter from “colored people” to President Abraham Lincoln. The blog, however, went too far, according to the National Tea Party Federation, who called it “clearly offensive” and reason for the expulsion.
  • Now that the Tea Party has come out against one racist element in their ranks, the NAACP has asked them to continue to address the issue.
  • Vice President Joe Biden also entered the debate today, stating on ABC that the Tea Party is not a racist organization.
