If you came here in 2005, you have been a resident for at least 4 tax years ('06/7/8/9). As a resident, legal or not, you are REQUIRED to file income tax returns. If you do not have a SSN, you need to get an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) so that your wife and you do not need to lie on your tax returns which Uncle Sam REALLY doesn't like! Tax returns are the main evidence of living together as a married couple. File an amendment for 2009 tomorrow.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

I don't have SSN and this is what I'll be including as proof:

* Time line of our relationship from when we met to our marriage.

* E-mails sent to a common friend dating from 2006 establishing relationship around that period.

* Facebook messages and pictures establishing frequent contact.

* Postcards I sent to my husband from over-seas while traveling.

* My month roster for the months of May and September when I flew to New York and Toronto respectively as Flight Crew, and met with my husband; Highlighting the dates I was in said places.

* My husband's e-mail confirmation for trips to New York and Toronto to meet up with me in May and September.

* Electronic ticket reservation of our flights to Uruguay in November (His departing from the US, mine departing from Dubai).

* Boarding passes of my trips to the US in February, March and May.

* E-mail sent from my e-mail address to my husband's forwarding our bus ticket reservation for a weekend in New York, in May 2010.

* My In-laws marriage congratulations card.

* Our friends marriage congratulations card.

* Cards received from family and friends who live over-seas, sent to the address where we live together.

* Hotel reservation for our wedding night.

* Affidavits sworn by family and friends.

* A selection of our pictures from 2006 – 2010 and of our wedding.

I don't have my SSN yet either, we have a joint checking account, a joint savings account, my name is on most of our utility bills, I am a cardholder on 4 of his credit card accounts, beneficiary on his life insurance. It can be done, you have to put in the effort.

I didn't have an SSN but I was able to go on the bank accounts, Cost Co membership, lease and some bills (like the Netflix, the phone bill, the gym membership). We also brought a ton of other stuff like photos, letters we'd sent each other over the years, cards from friends and family congratulating us on our engagement and wedding, etc.

At the interview the IO said to me "I understand that you don't have a social security number so it's hard for you to provide me with bills and insurance in both names. But it's obvious from the evidence you did produce that you are making the effort to co-mingle assets, and as long as you sort the rest out after you get the conditional GC, you'll be fine."

So basically, bring a ton of ####### to make up for the fact that you can't get a few bills in both names. If you hassle the gas and electric companies, and the cable company, they may add you as another resident in the apartment/house, but not an account-holder. That's what I managed to get, anyway.
