All I see on that site are some quotes that goes against the Republican party agenda and some mild Bush bashing, some of them more eloquently expressed than others. What is the problem?

"They [Americans] are possibly the dumbest people on the planet ... in thrall to conniving, thieving, smug pricks,” he replied. “We Americans suffer from an enforced ignorance. We don’t know about anything that’s happening outside our country. Our stupidity is embarrassing.”

michael moore

there's one example that comes to mind.

It would nice to see some specific quotes - so we know what we are working with, rather than baseless postulating and vitriol.

Unlike the evolution thread, I don't feel like doing the homework here. Go to http://www.celiberal.com/theWhineRack.php and click on any name.

About what I expected. Says a lot more about the site itself than the people it quotes (out of context I might add).

Not at all surprised you're sticking up for them. :)

I'm not sticking up for them - I just don't find your criticism to be a particularly fair one. X group of people are allowed to express their opinions but group Y aren't, not to mention the idea that certain comments about government policy are apparently deemed 'disloyal' and 'rubbishing america'.

Aside from their being "annoying", which seems to be rooted in some sort of 'lifestyle envy', what are they doing differently from any other person (with or without wealth and fame)?

I still don't see the problem. What is 'unamerican' about that comment other than the language used to express it?

If you don't want to hear things you don't like about your country move to china, I hear Google is instructed is very effective at preventing such things from even being viewed on your web browser and the government censorship is excellent.

Not that I expect you to believe me, but I couldn't be any LESS envious of their lifestyles.

Moore is an American, has lived there most, if not all of his life - I suppose that gives him something of an opinion. It's not like he just got off the boat - had a look around and said "this place is $hit!".

And yes people have said similar things about the UK - I don't have much of a problem with it really.

Ultimately you have to look at the substance of the criticism rather than simply focussing anger and righteous indignation on the guy saying it.

But you gotta admit you love some of their tactics, no? Imagine a world where you didn't have to listen to the like of Michael Moore!

I can criticize michael moore and still respect his right to free speech. Can you understand that?

The problem I have with Hollywood is that they say the dumbest things and do the stupidest things....

i.e.

Jane Fonda posing with N. Vietmanese anti aircraft crews and Kanye West saying G. Bush "doesn't like black people".

And they will play a role and consider themselves experts. Someone playing a farmer on TV doesn't even make them qualified to water my plants.

But there's no proof whatsoever that people are influenced by those views to any significant degree.

Tom Cruise railing in a TV interview about the nature of pyschiatric treatment, might not be professionally qualified to make such a determination, but that doesn't preclude him from having an opinion in the first place. Incidentally, he did have a point - although the vitriol that was thrown at him seemed to stem primarily from the way in which he articulated himself, not necessarily what he said. If people don't want to hear the opinions of celebrities then perhaps entertainment journalists should stop asking those questions?

Again I'm not sure how one becomes 'qualified', it might seem clear cut with professional classes such as doctors, engineers etc, but the distinction is far less clear when it comes to political issues - where you seem to be accepting as gospel the idea that a certain class of rich people have a more valid opinion than another.

Well you say that now. But then you also said:

So I have no right to be annoyed by the stupid ####### they say? Especially when they know that the stupid ####### they say is going to be read by millions of people? I can't be angry when celibrals, made rich by the United States of America, made famous by the United States of America - bash the United States of America and Americans?

In fact, the implication of what you have been saying in this thread is that you shouldn't have to hear opinions which you consider to be 'disloyal'. Claiming that something is "bashing america" is rather old IMO - a means of avoiding dealing with the issues presented by legitimate criticism. Noone says you have to agree with them, but throwing out the criticism without looking at the substance of the claims is rather weak, IMO.

I don't get it - what's wrong with writing the two statements? I want them to shut up. I DON'T want the government to shut them up.

Because you don't seem to react to the criticisms, as much as you do to the people making them.

None of the people quoted on that site you linked to has said anything particularly dissimilar to a lot of Americans, not to mention a lot of people on VJ. So I'm not really sure why you consider it to be so offensive…

What I do find a little bizarre is that a person can apparently be labelled a liberal, on the basis of a two or three line quotation. Some examples (picked at random from the site you provided the link for):

Johnny Depp

In response to George W. Bush's administration for its criticism of French opposition to the U.S.-led war in Iraq, "I was ecstatic they re-named 'French Fries' as 'Freedom Fries'. Grown men and women in positions of power in the U.S. government showing themselves as idiots."

Kirsten Dunst

"I was old enough to vote the last time, (but) I didn't. I am going to vote because anybody is better than George W. Bush. "It's scary what we're doing to the environment, and I'm scared that maybe (the war on Iraq) is going to get a lot worse before it gets better."

What do you specifically disagree with, about the above statements? Not sure I see anything particularly 'radical' or 'disloyal'.
