AT&T Nation with Canada Plan

Hi All,

I was in the US for 6 months last year working and so during that time I signed on with AT&T. I moved back to Canada this year to get the K1 process started and took my US AT&T phone with me. Initially I was debating keeping it or not (ahem roaming fees!) and around that same time AT&T released this great plan called "Nation with Canada". On this plan you can have 450, 900 or more minutes for respective $59.99, $79.99 etc. per month. These minutes are good for calls in US or Canada and while you are in Canada there are NO roaming fees (for any calls). Also NO long distance fees for calls ANYWHERE in Canada/US. Now if you have a smart phone (iphone) it also gives you discounted data roaming fees while you are in Canada at $2/MB. Which is less then the usual $30/MB or so when roaming. Of course when you're back in US the unlimited data kicks back in and you have unlimited mobile to mobile AT&T/A-list perks. I'm sure many of you may already know of this plan, or if not hope it helps!!

My husband got us the Verizon package which includes Canada. It's come in really handy. When I was with AT&T they didn't have that kind of plan available..... just some sort of travel plan that cost an extra $6/month but only gave you a reduced rate on the LD. You still had to pay the roaming fees.

cannot believe this! is this kind of post/advertising allowed? :bonk:

It's not an advertisement. It's help for those of us who need such a plan. :)

We don't have a cell phone so those prices look outrageous to me. I think your nuts to pay that much. I didn't even pay that much when I lived in Canada on my home phone with all the little extras and unlimited long distance for Canada and the US. But that is just me.

From 2003 to late 2004--untikl I moved to the USA---We used AT&T as our cell provider! Forget how much it was, but prob in the same ball park, and worked out very well! Our plan included unlimited evenings and weekends.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Its good info, I just think that is just way too much to pay. We travel without a cell I have no interest in getting calls when I'm not home.

Yes exactly you have unlimited or 1000 evening/weekend, unlimited calls to A-list and within US many more perks... as far as cell phone deals its pretty good.

Skype is a life-saver for me. An unlimited (15000 minutes/month, which we DID use up once or twice, believe it or not!) is under $10 for 3 months. Whenever I have wifi access I can call (at first I could only use my iPod Touch + Skype app to call, but now with Skype to Go, I can actually dial into a local number, and use skype through the phone)

Additionally, we both have unlimited international texting (me through Bell, her through Verizon) so we're always in touch one way or another. This, ESPECIALLY Skype, have kept costs wayyyy down.

Good info Wishing! I don't think those prices are bad at all. We have a similar plan with Verizon and we end paying around $110-120 a month, but that's with a second line added. It's nice to have a cellular option. We have digital voice at home so we can call Canada, unlimited minutes, without any extra fees, but sometimes you need to make a call and you're not at home. Skype and all those other options are great, but it doesn't replace that need to contact people when you're out of the house or not on the computer. Personally I'd rather pay more to have that flexibility, but that's me. It also provides that no roaming option and there are not extra texting fees. It seems like the only way to stay in contact with my teenage sister is to keep the texting package alive :hehe:

AT&T homephone also has the unlimited calling plan for $5.99 a month. It was like I struck gold when I found that out one day. Right now Mathew is still in the mindset that he doesn't need a cellphone because he's never had one. He barely uses his blackberry, but I swear I will bring him over to the darkside.

Actually I don't think people quite get the skype thing....everyone automatically thinks computer. I pay 2.95 for Skype and use the Skype to go feature. They provided me with a local number to call and from there I can then call any number in the US or Canada. I added the Skype number to my 'friends and favs' so I use no minutes when I call it.

We used to have the verizon Canada plan but honestly they pissed me off. Its supposed to be no roaming charges but every month we had an extra 7-8 bucks in roaming charges. My husband got tired of calling them monthly to fix the bill and a few times they wouldn't saying I must have been using data when I was in Canada :/ Once I moved here we swapped our plan over to the regular family plan. Both the at&t and verizon plans cost more for the canada plan then the regular US plan so paying 2.95 to be able to call canada from any phone works fabulous for me.

If you are travelling to Canada frequently then the Canada plan would be a good choice but if you just need to make calls to Canada from your cell then my wallet prefers the skype to go. lol

Sounds reasonable and a good plan which doesn't roam in Canada is hard to find. If I were a business traveller back forth between the US and Canada, it would be the thing to have.

Within the US, we use Verizon and have a family plan for 5 phones (incl. 2 which are 3G & have unlimited data plans) and we pay $200 per month. We don't use minutes usually, but we have unlmited text because all 5 of us (3 teenagers) use texting almost exclusively. The only thing we miss is NOT being able to have an iPhone :(
