Like many Filipinas, I never learned how to drive before coming to the US. So my husband first taught me the driving basics in our apartment complex's parking lot. There was also a high school nearby, so he would also take me there on weekends and practice driving around that parking lot. When I received my Learner's Permit, he let me drive around the neighborhood and the places where we always go to (supermarket, church, etc.). After he had taught me all the basics, he had me enrolled in an Adult Driving School where I was taught by a professional driving instructor. Of course, I'd still practice driving with my husband all over town. My weakest points were my sharp turns and how to park correctly, so he would patiently teach me how to do them right. He'd always make sure that I PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE every day! :bonk:

Last week, I took my driving exam and passed it! Now, I am proud to say that I can drive by myself. I'm NOT saying that I'm already an excellent driver, but at least I'm way better than when I had first started. Hehehe!

i taught my wife how to drive. it took a while. once she was able to drive safety with me but not drive alone, every time we left the house, she drove, no exceptions, that helped.

a lot of new drivers look at the lines in the road (the ones immediately in front of them), get her to scan way ahead.... look up and scan.

we started in a church parking lot then went to the mall parking lot when mall wasn't busy. we drove to LV too so she got comfortable with scanning ahead of her and not looking at lines that are right in front of her and recognizing that when someone brakes ahead, in the distance, to pay more attention.

finally, when it was time for my wife to take her test, we went to DMV a week ahead and followed others taking their test so we knew where the examiners where going. we practiced everyday for around 90 minutes in the area of the test. my wife knew the area very well by the time she was tested.

my wife still isn't so good when driving in areas she hasn't been before. the typical trips, to the store for whatever, to work, she is an expert now.

we drove to LA a few monoths long ago, i drove but she paid strict attention to the map so she learned how to read a map on that trip. she didn't know anything about north-east-west-south as it pertains to driving and getting around.

So, we decided long ago, that Marie should learn how to drive. We bought a car a year and a half ago, just for her to drive. Off and on again, I took her out for lessons, until it became too much for me. My poor heart! :(

I decided it was time for a professional to take over. She decided to let the issue go away.

That was last summer. Now, this summer, when Marie brought up the subject, I said, go ahead, and find a driving instructor. She found one that met our criteria: Still breathing and willing to drive to Forestville.

Last Friday, he shows up and gives her the first lesson. So far, so good. When he returns, he says, "This is going to take a while. I think I understand what you must have gone through." :P

So, we make an appointment for another lesson the following Monday. Monday morning he calls in sick. We make another appointment for Saturday. The school calls Friday evening and cancels. :(

So, last night, we decided I will just have to try and teach her again myself. :help:

Comments? Any ideas? Since I will soon be falling off the wagon, any interesting cocktail recipes developed since I quit serious drinking?

when my husband started to teach me how to drive we had a non stop argument. He always yelled at me. He gave up teaching me because he dont want to argue anymore. He said i'm not gonna learn because we always argue. We hired a professional instructor. We payed $25 dollar per hour. After 4th session 2hrs every session my instructor set me up AN APPOINTMENT TO DMV.first try I failed but 2nd try I passed it. Its hard to teach your own wife because you will argue a lot much better if u hire a professional driving instructor

We have never argued during or bcoz of the driving lessons. I expect mistakes (will occur) until Asawa ko perfects the needed driving skills. Asawa ko also understands that my instructions are not "bossy" but simply necessary coaching. The main reason why Asawa ko has learned to drive (with me as the instructor) is bcoz we have maintained a calm environment. We both know that arguing and yelling is just going to make the learning impossible so...why do it?
