My fiance started teaching me how to drive a few weeks after I got here. First in the backyard, then in our street. The first time, he was so happy cuz he said he's still alive and the car and the pool are still intact :P And a month ago, we went to this quiet neighborhood, and he let me drive for almost 30 mins. I'm happy because he's got a lot of patience. He just tells me to relax whenever I drive cuz I look tensed everytime

We had a couple more lessons today. Marie drove us to the laundromat this morning, and I let her drive home, when I picked her up after a day with her girlfriends. We had a few close calls, but no harm, no foul. Other drivers are so impatient, especially when Marie freezes in the middle of an intersection. This morning one driver tried to pass on the right, and make a left in front us.

I will have to teach my fiance how to drive also. But c'mon, how hard can it be for her?

Kind of like riding a bike------wait, my Sarah never learned to ride a bike.....

Umm, it's kind of like learning to swim------wait, my Sarah never learned to swim.......

Ok, I'm scared now! I have these three activities to teach her.

As to the thread topic name: Filipinas out there should not take offense---to me the question just relates to the very high percentage of women in the Philippines that do not drive. After experiencing both Manila and Davao traffic and seeing driving customs, I think the Filipinas that did learn to drive in the Philippines should be proud----proud that by a margin of 10 to 1, it is the Filipinos that are such horrible and inconsiderate drivers. I would let a Filipina drive my car anyday before letting a male driver from Manila 'take it for a spin'. Maybe the traffic violation 'free for all' that is the Philippines would be better off if men drove less, and women took on s stronger driving role.

My friend with a Filipina wife that lives here in my city told me, "before I can even start to teach her to drive, she must learn how to re we are going. If I get even three blocks away, she is already lost as to HOW we arrived where we are at." Guess I had never considered, if you do not drive, and if you never plan to drive in a certain place, your incentive to learn directions, shortcuts, etc is greatly reduced.

I have heard there is a chain of driving schools in some cities. It is called 'The Richard Petty Driving Experience". Perhaps a

Maybe if this school is so popular, I should get my fiance lessons with them once she arrives.

The title of this thread sounds insulting to all filipinas...as if you are saying or you sounded that filipinas are not capable to learn or can't be taught how to drive. If your wife is a filipina and has the difficulty to drive, don't generalize that filipinas are like that. I would rather suggest to rephrase this title of this threas to Can "MY WIFE"... instead of Can "A FILIPINA". Please be sensitive. (To the moderators: What do you think about this?)

I am a Filipina. I learned to drive and got my driver's license here in the US thru my hubby who taught me how to drive. We did not hire any professional driving instructor.

Filipinas are not excluded on the ability to drive a car or be taught to drive. Learning how to drive can't only be attributed to the learner's capacity to learn but to the teacher's/ instructor's skills to teach.

Lighten up girl. We're just having horseplay. Chill out. You're staring to sound like a Kanuk.:lol:

Hokey Smoke!

Rocky: "Baby, are they still mad at us on VJ?"

Bullwinkle: "No, they are just confused."

I agree the title is so insulting , In fact, I don't see how USCIS processes your wife or finance's to come here when you talk down about her based on her culture/race.

You want her to drive? teach her to drive, she is more than able to drive. Unless you are so old you can't drive, in which case maybe she is just waiting for you to die so she can move on in life

Filipinas can drive just fine, #######

I do not think it is insulting. Relax a bit. He say it with a bit humor. I do not think he meant to insult any one.

I sent my wife to driving school last Nov 09 in the Philippines. The driving school there consisted of getting into a car and driving,Nothing else needed since no traffic laws are obeyed or taught. When she arrived Stateside in May she was eager to show me that she could drive. We had already discussed that here we have traffic laws and you pretty much have to obey them less you have an accident.

Well, One day we were in riding in our subdivision and she asked me to let her drive. I said ok, We swapped seats and off we went. I was thinking WOW she really is doing a great job. Then we came to the stop sign, The truck was not slowing down. I explained to her there is a stop sign and you must stop for it. This was repeated camly 4 times to no avail. At this point I am scarred out my pants cause the other road has the right of way. I finally screamed, There is a stop sign and you must stop now (Bad mistake on my part). Well, When I looked over at her she had done froze up and had a death grip on the steering wheel. YUP, we drove right through the stop sign and luckily no car hit us. I told her to stop now and let me drive. She remained very quite and did as I asked. I then told her that she would be going to driving school here near our place as she needs classroom time so she can fully understand our traffic rules. She is scheduled to take drivers ed class on Aug 2nd. She is happy and I am happy about this decision! She learned a lot from watching me drive and having things explained to her so I know she will do well. Once she is finished with her class I will continue to let her drive and learn. Oh, I did ask her again a few weeks later if she would like to drive again, But please listen to me when I speak,Lol. She said no, Would rather wait until my class is over so I will better understand the traffic laws.

If my wife can learn to drive any filipina can! :D It only took 6-months and $500 worth of driving lessons (plus all of my patience). She had to take the written and driving tests twice but now she is a decent driver. But she needs GPS to not get lost in the small town we live in!

I'll admit the first couple times out were scary but I just tried to stay calm and not raise my voice even if I was scared.

If I had it to do over, I would hire an instructor for the first couple of times behind the wheel (where they have a brake on their side of the car too!! lol), then start instructing her after she's a bit practiced.

Now she's just too cautious, I need to teach her to be a little more aggressive (but happy it's too cautious than too aggressive), but I hardly ever feel like there might be an accident anymore.

Now she's pregnant though, and I'm not sure how much longer I want her to drive, for the safety of her and the baby.

There's no need to teach the missus as she has been driving in the PI for over 10 years. The only problem now is how she can abide by the speed limits. Say, on a trip to the Bay Area last week along pastoral Interstate 5 in California's San Joaquin Valley, from the Grapevine to Santa Nella, she was impersonating Danica Patrick doing her thing at Infineon Raceway! However, I was often times enthused, wishing that the girl cop on the Go Daddy commercial would appear. :star::star:
