Here's a compromise - make it legal to hunt and kill them, but have a 365 day (366 day in a leap year) close season.

Transgressors/violators/evil doers who hunt outside the season, to bury their own mistakes a minimum of 20 feet down using a teaspoon and between noon and 2pm only.

I knew a reasonable compromise could be achieved

This concept was first introduced to me by the State of Washington who said I could have a gun license if the FBI got a favorable report - in the full knowledge that the FBI refuses to give a report on privacy grounds. The NRA changed all that but it's still a stupid enough device to be popular in these here parts.
