Problem with IRS Return

Hi everyone,

I am looking for some insights. I was starting to get my packet ready for I-751 so I ordered tax transcripts for 2008 and 2009.

When I received them, I about had a heart attack when they showed my maiden name. I still have copies of the returns and they show my married name so it is not a mistake on my end.

I called the IRS and they researched it. It appears that whomever entered my tax returns just copy-pasted the info from the prior years. Unfortunately, I only have two options:

*file an amended return to get my name changed which can take a few weeks to get updated

*ask for a certified copy of what I filed which cost $57 and 60 days to get

This seems to be too much headaches and was wondering if it is a big deal. I could ask provide USCIS with copies of what I filed. It is not official but it is what I filed.

Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

PS: Did I mention they did the same mistake two years in a row (2008 and 2009)?

There's another thing to try -

GO TO LOCAL IRS OFFICE, talk with Human - many Humans at the IRS OFFICE have GOD ACCESS to the computers, in REAL TIME -

and then -

right then and there,

get IRS printed tax transcripts.

All in Real Time, in an office, at a counter/desk.

Give it a try, let me know how it went ?

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

Transcipts aren't necessarily a requirement, so IMO, file i-751 with just the copies of the returns showing that you did file with married name.

In the meantime I would get the transcripts corrected so they are ready in case USCIS wants/asks to see actual transcripts later on in the process. This way you don't delay filing but you'll be a step ahead of USCIS if they end up being picky about it. :)

I did get the IRS transcripts. They screwed up. I am going to try a local office though, see if I get a better luck. I will let you know if anything is different.

I think I am going to try with a local IRS office. If they say they can't do anything, I will go ahead and file two amended returns but will send copies of my original returns to the IRS in the meantime.

This is so complicated when it is not even my fault.

Thank you for taking the time to give me some suggestions. :)

It matters what your name is on your Social Security Card. If your SS Card says(example: Jones) then your return should say the same. If you are goning by your married name. your SS card should reflect that. Make Sure Social Security has your married name. If not, tell SSA to send the IRS an Update. You Don't need to file an amended return for a Name Change. That can be done over the phone. They can print the transcripts and send them to you by mail or fax.

SS card has been reflecting my married name for a while. Are you sure that I can do a name change for a tax return over the phone? The guy made it clear that my only choice was to file an amended return. But after reading the instructions for 1040X, it says to use the same names as originally filled. I feel like I am going in circles.

Lili -

bring in yer SSN card, yer marriage certificate, to the IRS OFFICE -

then.

1. ask them to change yer name at the office. Wait a few moments, and then

2. ask them to print out the tax transcripts with the new name.

Good Luck !

yes there is no reason to file an anmended return because your not changing any fiqures or adding any dependents or anything like that. Amended returns take 12-16 weeks to process. Just Call the IRS and they will see that your last name has changed to the married name under YOUR SSN. Then they can input a name perfection. so after that, they may ordered the trnascripts thru the Transcript Delivery System. If you can, ask them to Fax it to you right then. but you need to be by the Fax machine so they can confirm that you received it.

Well, I called again and the problem is not from the IRS but SSA.

The SSA has my maiden in the first place and my married name in the second place. The IRS is picking up the first place name not second. So I need to go to SSA and get that fixed. He said that it will take 3 to 4 months for the systems to get updated.

This is fun. I will go to SSA tomorrow and let you know how that works.

yes, I am going to send copies of what I sent in. And yes, my social security card is with my married name. For almost 2 years now... T-2 hours before I go to SSA. Wish me luck.

Thank you for the luck, Nibake.

So I went there. The lady checked and saw that my name was correct in the system so she figured she will send an update through the system just to see if it fixes the problem. When she did that, she realized that USCIS has my maiden name in their system. This is what is most likely causing problems as their systems are all interconnected.

I tried calling the misinformation line at first but they said they couldn't do anything. I have an infopass for Tuesday hoping that this finally can get fixed.

When I first applied for my green card, it was in my maiden name. When I had the interview, I explained that I wanted to start to use my married. She said "no problem, I will get the system updated". When I received the green card and approval notices, they were all in my married name. I guess somehow, someone didn't updated the "masterdatabase" or whatever is it that they use.
