Hey Norah,

Thanks for the help. I actually called the US customs and border control myself and the woman I spoke to said that all my husband needs to bring is proof he fully intends to go back to Canada after visiting the United States (but also that he should bring as much as he can). So it sounds like the people in the other thread were correct. This is an absolutely massive relief!

Thanks again,

- Sam

I like your answer better GL let us know how it goes

Did you call the general number or your POE? When I called the general number, they told me that we could as well, but that whether or not to allow to cross will be at the discretion of the POE. I have called Toronto Pearson border patrol twice and talked to them in person once. All three times they told me that they would deny him entry no matter what he brought, despite the general number's telling that he just needed proof of return and continuing residency in Canada.

I also called two of the Ontario bridges who told me "no".

I DO hope that you get a different answer and can go through without problems, but if you haven't called your port of entry, I would do that next. If they will allow you to, they should be able to tell you what they want to see.

Good luck! I hope that all is well for you.

oh sorry, just reread this, congrats on getting everything approved. I think we might looking into just going to Vancouver and getting a waiver. Just looking to see how I do that. So was it just you that went to Montreal?

Yes it was just me that went to Montreal. We live in Vancouver so we didn't have to travel for the medical. That sucks that you have to travel for the medical and the interview.

Actually we crossed quite a few times for my healthcare and a few vacations in the 6 months we waited and we never had a problem. We went by car. Maybe it's our ages. We had a letter from the hubby's job (he is the canadian) but we never had a problem or were asked anything other than the routine questions of how long and for what.

We just crossed permanently.

Good luck

My guess it's on an individual basis, and how you are crossing. We crossed with our car and we had crossed many times as we used US healthcare so we used to go more than just once or twice a year.

I rented my apartment and it wasn't a huge problem.

I did it over the internet and phone. Since I was gone for so long, they wanted to do a canaidan credit check which was fine for us and I had to have the lease notarized in Canada by a lawyer which cost $65 but it wasn't a huge deal.

I opened electric and gas via the phone, as long as one has a US SS# you should be ok, but I think it is also on a state by state basis as to where you will live and also the rental place.

My rental place wanted proof of income etc but again they accepted my hubby's income slips.

Good luck

As for what they asked for at the interview.

Originals, plus certified translations if in a language other than english. Copies were not requried to be certified, but you had to have the original and a notarized/certified translation.

If you don't have the original I will assume that it has to be notarized and certified. That was not an issue for us so I don't know.

Re taxes. I went in Jan of this year and 2010 was not required. I showed past taxes but I had 0 income anyway as I didn't work.

We qualified on assets. But I had proof of docmicile in the way of a lease, gas and electric bill and I had proof that I am now part owner of a business in the USA.

I think they are looking for proof of income to show you qualify for the affidavit of support.

As I said we qualified on assets, I showed bank and investment statements from Canada and the US and that was enough.

Tauruslady is right, we paid exactly what she paid. You have to pay the $404 at the embassy at the time of interview.

That is the visa fee.

Good luck to all

You must bring the appointment letter to the interview. They ask for it before they let you in at the door to the consulate in Motnreal.

This letter is the confirmation of your appointment. DAte/Time, applicant's name etc.

I got it in an e-mail confirmation and the printout when I booked the appointment. I did not get anything else.

But that is requried.

Hope this helps.

Hey guys,

For those that were involved in the discussion on whether the intending immigrant would be able to visit the States, I just wanted to let you know that my husband had no trouble crossing the border. He brought all his documentation specifying his return to Canada just in case, but they didn't even question him. We went through customs at the Toronto Airport. So, I think there shouldn't be too much worry for anyone else looking to do the same. Just make sure you bring as much proof for your return to Canada as possible.

BTW - thanks for all the helpful information housewife. Congrats on finally making it into the United States.

Thanks,

- Sam

Good luck to all, I'm glad that you had no probs. Happy to help.

We are still unpacking. Hubby is anxiously awaiting his SS#

SS said to wait 3 weeks. We went.

They won't check or look. This is their reply, and the lady was knowledgable. She said, DHS often applies for it. So we don't look or check for 3 weeks from the day you crossed.

If after 3 weeks you don't get it, you can come in and we will look/check/issue you one.

It's a problem as he needs it to get his US driver's licence and then buy his car.

good luck to all

Hi all,

My husband has his interview in 2 days so you can imagine we are a bit stressed right now. I am trying to fill out the I-864 form and am confused about what section. I asked a question over in the 'IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Process & Procedures' area of the forum but haven't quite got the answer i'm looking for so I thought i'd ask here since I think people have probably been in similar situations.

I have a job here in Canada, but it will not continue down in the United States. With that in mind, I need to know what to put for:

1) Part 4 Question 23 (my current income)

2) Part 4 Question 24 (my current income)

3) Part 4 Question 25c (total income)

The reason i'm confused is I thought that only income that will continue in the United States can be counted against the minimum you must earn. People have told me to still put my income, but I feel like i'm filling it out wrong if I do that since the income will not continue in the States. Can someone clear this up for me and tell me specifically what I should put for the questions above.

One other quick thing: since i'm converting our Canadian assets to American dollars, do I need to mention which conversion rate I used and if so, where would I do that?

Thanks,

- Sam

so we got our packet 4 info and can schedule, but we have 5 to be interviewed and it won't let us schedule. I called the # that schedules but they can't do anything either. So we can't actually schedule because it tells us there are no available appointments. We have been registered on the site for 5 months and not once has there been an appointment available. Has anyone else had this issue? Not sure how we can get an appointment and with the lack of help that you get, not sure how we will ever schedule one. Can anyone help?

Hey Norah,

I actually had something similar happen to me, but I don't know if it was for the same reason. I noticed they only allow people to schedule interviews a few months out. I remember back in September or October when we tried to schedule our interview, they only allowed you to schedule up to Christmas and by that point, all the times were taken. We visited the site two weeks later, and they had updated it so you could schedule into March and April of this year.

Again, don't know if it's the same reason, but I would check back in a couple of weeks.

Take care,

- Sam

no I think it is different. I have checked weekly to start and now everyday for 5 mo and there has not once said there were any appointments. The guy on the phone said it was because of the size of our group. I keep checking and have a couple emails in to see if anyone will reply but their auto reply says they don't respond to questions about scheduling, so we will see. Thanks tho

Hey guys,

Don't know if anyone really pays attention to this thread anymore, but my husband had his interview on Friday and he was approved! Hooray! I want to thank everyone who helped us out along our journey (although most people are no longer here :) ). It still doesn't quite feel like it's over yet until my husband gets his passport back. Anyways, we're planning on moving in just over a month so we got a busy month ahead.

I didn't help but wanted to say congratulations! We still can't get an interview. My sister got her packet 4 and booked the same day. We did an experiment and took one kid off and we can see appointments then. Very frustrating as you can't actually get anyone to help you with this. Feeling like we have been through all of this and will never be able to get an actual appointment. BTW I check about 5 times a day at this point.
