Hi everyone!

Quick question for those that have leased an apartment down in the States: how hard was it to lease a place? I know this sounds like a very general and maybe dumb question, but i've been a bit bothered by the fact that since I have no credit down in the States, it may be hard to rent an apartment. What has everyone else's experience been. I know a lot of people used a lease agreement with their family to prove domicile, but for those that didn't, i'm wondering if finding a place was a challenge at all given the fact you may not have lived down in the U.S. for years.

Thanks,

- Sam

It was not easy. I am the american (wife) I have been gone 23 years so I have no credit history and I have no job in the US. I don't work here.

For us and where I wanted to rent what I had to do is give them both my husband and mine canadian ss# so they could do background and credit checks from up here, show my hubby's last 3 paychecks and fill out the rental application and show assets to cover the rent for a year in bank account. I offered the full year up front but that was not even acceptable.

Now small town may be different. This was for a bigger city in an apartment complex. In the small town one agent said a year up front was fine for him if I had no job/credit in the USA.

And who you are renting from.

One woman landlady in a small town was so nosey she wanted your life history and was trying to screw me. Of course I didn't let her and just went elsewhere. It all depends on where you want to live and your personal history and if you will have a job in the USA

I am not scaring you I am just warning you that it will depend on your personal situation

congrats to Jadenjewl who finally got her interview after I think 130 days of waiting

Hey everyone,

Sorry we disappeared for a bit...sick kids keeping us busy...

Anyway, less than a month to go, actually I guess it's just about 3 weeks!!

Thank you guys so much whoever posted domicile ideas, it's been a big help.

Here's what we've come up with so far for the domicile stuff:

• Lease agreement wtih family

• Shipping quote from ABF U-Pack Moving

• Bank statements

• Credit card statements

• Professional license

• Child care registration confirmation letter and canceled check of registration fee

• One-way ticket purchase confirmation and trip itinerary

• Car insurance quote

• Driver’s license

• Voter registration card

What do yall think? Any other ideas for other domicile proofs we could use?

Also I was wondering, do you think we need to explicitly state our lease agreement is with family or can we just say here's our lease agreement? Someone said they look at these family leases differently, ie, don't take them as seriously?

Also, does anyone know about voter registration cards, is it something you get once and then have forever? B/c mine is dated year 2000, so that really doesn't serve as any proof of anything at all - anyone know if there's a way to renew it??

Thanks for sharing everyone, it really helps a lot!

Take care all.

Another question.

My husband has his tdap, and smallpox and anti tb from when he was a kid and a hospital form that he had a booster in June of '04 for td.

Now I went to some homeland security website and it says for his age (61) he needs a tdap but td was acceptable, flue vaccine which he is actually getting on his job before the medical and they said a signed note from the doctor certifiying he gave it to him is just fine and the only other thing for a man of 61 is varicilla (chickenpox)

Is that an oral declaration or should he get the antibodies test. Reason is that I'm going to my US doctor and can ask him to do the test for my DH (he will be with me) and he can fax me the results. I'm sure in the US 2 - 4 weeks is enough time to get the results??

Anyone who has had the medical recently would be aprpeciated knowing, especially if you had it at medisys in Montreal so I know what to expect??

Dont know anything about medisys....but we had our dr in calgary order all the antibody titers tests and they were back in a week. In the US when I used to get blood work done all the time for my tumors it usually took up to two weeks to get the results back.

I actually had a blood test done yesterday in the US and the doctor in the US had the results today.

It was the standard Chem panel/lipd for the yearly so maybe things are faster.

I don't have a doctor here nor does my DH. We do US healthcare.

2 weeks will be enough time. I can always reschuled the medical for the following week if I need an extra week.

They told me 10 years for td at medisys that it's good for 10 years.

Hey all,

Please remember to come back after interview approval and write up a consulate review - it helps everyone who's still waiting. :)

You can submit your review at the Consulate Review section.

Any details are great - pay in cash/credit, what documents asked for, etc.

Birdned. Thanks for the info re the 864

Will do, it's the least I can do for all the help i got here, I am happy to give back and help others anyway I can.

I have 3 months to go for mine. Booked medical for the hubby. He is getting his flu shot at the office so I booked it for after that so he can have the letter from the doctor. I'll see about getting a chickenpox tiler just to be safe, and I have a certificate from the US hospital that the had a td booster in '04. I called and they said it's generally good for 10 years so hopefully he won't need any shots at his age. I printed out the chart from homeland security and the whole guidelines and bringing it with me to medical and interview just to be safe.

Good luck birdned.
