Canadian DCFs Waiting for Interview in Montreal

I was very concerned about domicile as well, especially after reading on here about how strict Montreal are on this. I went into it expecting to be denied until further proof was provided (we tend to prepare for the every possibility to ensure we have a plan).

For domicile we had a standard lease with family, drivers licence, voter reg card, bank statements, moving quote, MLS listing of our place in Canada, and an application for a professional licence in the USA. Essentially all the docs that other posters have suggested.

The lease was a standard lease for the state we are moving to - just google lease agreement for the state you are moving to and draw one up between you and your family who you plan to stay with.

I can't say what was the main factor they considered for our proof of domicile - we don't have kids and don't have jobs in the US either. I don't know whether it was the documentation we had or our personal circumstances (age, wealth, status in Canada, education, qualifications, family, reasons for moving).

Congrats Superspur! That's great news, and thanks for all the info you posted back in your review =)

Please make sure to let us know how long it takes to get the DHL package back in the mail!

I had a question I was hoping you could elaborate on.

You mentioned in your previous post, "The interviewer spent a fair amount of time going through the financial support docs".

Can you please elaborate on the types of financial docs you provided, and the types of questions they asked? How did that part of the interview go?

Thanks and congrats again! =)

They went through the affidavit of support and seemed to be looking for certain things (US income, joint sponsor, US tax return), none of which in our specific case were relevant (they skipped over the bits that were and had to go back and look). I don't think ours was typical hence why it took longer, but we had all the correct documentation for it (bank statements etc) so it wasn't a problem, just took a while. They are pretty clearly what qualifies you so if you meet all the requirements and provide documentation backing it up I can't see why it would be an issue.

ok just starting freaking out.....as yall know there was no checklist in the P3 now. So I made up my own and sent it in with my DS230, but now they have updated that CSC site with a checklist. I had everything on their checklist on mine, BUT it requires a signature at the bottom. I didnt sign ours. Do yall think we are gonna get an RFE for that? I sure hope not, especially since when I returend it there was no option to find a checklist anywhere.

Got our letter from MTL today!! Documents will be sent back to them in the next couple of days. Thanks so much to every one who reads and contributes to this forum. It's so helpful!!

When I was logged on to the us-visa site I saw that the next available date for an interview was december 14, for those that can book now. I'm sending back the stuff w. dhl I guess and then booking an appt. six weeks after, once the e-mail comes back from mtl.

Thanks again birdnerd for this thread. It is appreciated by so many :)

Congrats to all.

Am/Can, I made my husband sign the checklist. Maybe they will let it go since they didn't have one. I wrote a note on the bottom saying that there was none so I am making one of my own.

Hopefully they will accept yours.

don't freak out.

DH went to get his RCMP clearance today they said he can pick it up in 7 -10 days so I'm not worried re time line.

I need to get it moving though

I had my interview today...and was approved!!! Woot Woot!!! What a long and stressful process, so happy that's done now :) We've been in Montreal for 8 days. I had my medical on the 23rd and interview today, so we had to hang around in the meantime. It worked out since my in laws are in Quebec, so we went to visit them over the weekend then came back to Montreal on Monday. The interview went really well, the worst thing really was the sitting and waiting. The actual interview was pretty easy, just basically chatted with the lady, then she said it was approved. I was a little stunned since I was expecting to be denied because of domicile. But we were well prepared, thanks to VisaJourney. I wrote up a letter explaining that we were planning to re-establish domicile (my husband hasnt lived in the US since he was 10), and I attached all our documents of proof to it. I guess it was good enough, she didnt even ask anything about it. The only hiccup we had was at the medical. I had to have a letter from my doctor faxed to Medisys since I have a condition called Hemochromatosis. They just needed a letter explaining my diagnosis and treatment. That took a few day to get since it's very hard to get a hold of my doctor, but managed to get it done the day before the interview. We were also able to pick up the medical results the day before the interview. We went to the consulate at 7:30 and were out of there by noon, so it was a long morning. Now to get ready to move :) :)

congrats dawninnet. Good luck on your move.

I am anxiously awaiting for our pkt 4 so I can book.

I need to go down to the USA for my healthcare checkup. I don't get healthcare in Canada. I hope it won't be an issue for DH to pass through. He will have a letter both times as I need to go down 2 times to see 2 different doctors. He will have a letter from his office saying he is returning to work and is a partner. I'm hopeing that they see that in the 20++ years we are together that he was nothing more ever than a tourist for a couple of weeks. I really need to go for my checkups.

That is actually more stressing for me than the rest is the fact that I need to go down with him a couple of times and judging from the dates we won't have an appt before x-mas and I want to go away for the holidays. DOn't want to stay here. I booked a nice trip so I'm hopeing that will be ok too. He will have letters every time from his job and I can prove he owns the condo here. Hopefully that is enough.

While I did not go through via DCF I believe that the rule is that the non-USC must enter the US at the same time or later than the USC spouse. You might want to double check on that if you were planning on having your husband move down first. Good luck !

Thanks OBX, I guess I wasn't clear - I meant we'd move down there first before he'd be able to get a job, not that he'd move there before me, but I appreciate you taking the time to point it out. :)

Adichiwa and pinguino, we're waiting to hear about your interviews!

Dawnlinnet, please share your domicile proofs! TIA!

Congratulations, Dawn! How exciting!

I have a question for all of you, I'm not sure if this is the right forum to ask, but here goes anyway.

My question is regarding the medical - I'm a little stressed about it! First of all - vaccinations: I had my vaccinations updated last week, I got the MMR shot and the Tdap (Adacel). I also had a blood test proving that I have had chicken pox (Varicella), and I will bring that proof. The medical office website seemed to indicate that those are the only shots I need for my age group (I'm 37). Have any of you heard anything different?

Also, I have struggled with minor depression for many years. It's completely under control now, I take a low-dose antidepressant, and have for a few years. The letter I received said that I if I had been "treated for" or hospitalized for any mental illness I had to bring a letter from my doctor stating my diagnosis and prognosis. I've never been hospitalized, but since I'm on antidepressants I assume that's considered being "treated for" mental illness. Has anyone else had to provide such a letter? I feel like I need to give my doctor some kind of guidance about what to write... Can anyone give me any advice on this?

Thanks!

Heather

Hi Everyone,

Another question for those who know the ropes with the Montreal Consulate:

Is my husband (the US Citizen) allowed to come with me to the interview? In my Packet 4 hard-copy letter it says any US Citizen can accompany me, but in the email I got confirming my interview date and time it says that only official translators and helpers for those with disabilities can accompany you into the interview - no lawyers or anyone who isn't specifically named in the confirmation. The letter goes on to explain that due to time and manpower required to screen for security, they can't let un-necessary people into the Consulate. We had been told (anecdotally - nothing official) that it looked better for the interview if he came with me - to help establish the validity of our relationship, but if he's not allowed to come then that shouldn't matter. We've been together for 6 years, married for 4 years and have a son. We lived together in Canada for 5 years before he got a new job in Seattle and moved back to the States. It should be fairly clear to the interviewer that our marriage is no hoax just so I can get into the states...

I'd rather not have to spend the money for my husband's airfare to Montreal - the flight from Van isn't cheap!! And I'm actually secretely craving some "me" time - we have a 20 month old son and I feel like I haven't had more than 5 minutes alone for the past 2 years!! Just the thought of a 5 hour flight where I can read or watch a movie or do whatever I want while being completely unreachable gives me shivers of excitement!! But I digress... Ahem....

Any advice would be appreciated!! Thanks!

Heather

Your husband can go with you to the interview, but it isn't necessary. My husband came to Montreal with me and to the consulate, but didn't go into the actual interview. We felt it best if he didn't (he's a babbler when he's nervous, lol).

As for the medical, I'd get a letter from you doctor beforehand if I were you. I have a medical condition that I needed a letter for, and I spent a stressful few days calling back to my doctor to get it faxed to Montreal since I didnt have it ahead of time. Better to be prepared in case they ask for it.

I wrote up a letter for my husband saying that he intended to re-establish domicile...I got an example from here, I believe in the proving domicile thread. It just basically listed the steps he had taken to re-establish domicile, and the supporting documents attached. Here's the letter:

Name

Social Security #

FORM I-864

No. 15 Country of Domicile

I, _________, am currently residing in Canada with my wife. Below you will find a list of attached documents to show my intention to re-establish domicile in the US and the steps that I have taken to re-establish domicile.

Steps I have taken to re-establish domicile in the US:

• Purchased a house in Florida.

• Obtained a social security number.

• Obtained a US Passport

• Quit my job in Canada.

• Contacted shipping company for estimate of costs to ship belongings.

• Opened a bank account in the US.

Supporting documents for the above steps I have taken:

• Mortgage statement for our property in the US

• Utility bills from house in the US

• Bank statements from our US account.

• Quote from shipping company

• Letter of resignation from my current job.

• Copy of social security card

• US passport

I declare that I intend in good faith to re-establish my domicile in the United States no later than the date of my wife’s admission into the US.

I certify under penalty of perjury under the laws of the United States that the statements in this letter and all accompanying evidence are true and correct.

Signature: __________________________________________Date: ________________

Thanks OBX, I guess I wasn't clear - I meant we'd move down there first before he'd be able to get a job, not that he'd move there before me, but I appreciate you taking the time to point it out. :)

Adichiwa and pinguino, we're waiting to hear about your interviews!

Dawnlinnet, please share your domicile proofs! TIA!
