NEW ORLEANS -- BP says oil from its broken well has stopped gushing into the Gulf of Mexico for the first time since April.

The announcement Thursday came after company officials said all valves had been shut on a new cap over the busted well in an experiment to stop the spill.

Kent Wells, a BP PLC vice president, said at a news briefing that oil stopped flowing into the water at 2:25 p.m. CDT.

It was a long-awaited milestone in one of the nation's worst environmental disasters. While not a permanent solution to plug the busted well, the success in capturing the oil spewing out was welcome news.

The crisis began when BP's deepwater rig exploded, killing 11 workers.

The cap is not a permanent fix. BP is drilling two relief wells so it can pump mud and cement into the leaking well in hopes of plugging it for good.

There's a lot of smart and talented people working on this problem. There will be a lot of knowledge gained from this disaster when it is finally over. Too bad this technology and infrastructure wasn't already existing and in place to be utilized before this type of well blew out. Hindsight is 20-20, but government and industry dropped the ball by not having it already in place as part of the required "Oil Spill Contingency Plan". They were behind the curve in the relatively new frontier of deepwater petroleum exploration and production.

Interestingly, it took longer for this to happen than for USCIS to complete my husband's AOS. Sort of puts things into a little perspective.

There should be a levy on fuel to pay for such incidents. Furthermore, there needs to be the requirement of a comprehensive plan [study] and fail-safe measures to ensure the chance of this happening again is mitigated. I don't even work in oil, yet when looking at it from day one, realized that a second relief well should be mandatory with each drill.

I hope nuclear plants are not operated in the same fashion, only to find out their safety measures were a crock of ######.

On the bold. Had government officials inspected the wells and not approved it to begin with, then this wouldn't have happened.

Yes, had BP done their job this wouldn't have happened as well, but I'm pointing out the fact that regulation is only as good as the regulators who enforce the rules.

I held my nerve and backed the Brits.

It was an industrial accident and probably Halliburton (####### cheney) and TransOcean (95% of it's employees are in Houston) or Cameron (US makers of the shut off valve) who share much if not all the blame and therefore the eventual liability.
