my husband applied for his ss card on july 12th. and still nothing! before we left the ss office (we're here in pittsburgh), they gave us a generic letter stating that he applied for a card and that it'll take up to 4 weeks. then, we received another notice in the mail, the same generic letter, about 1.5 weeks ago saying that it'll take another additional 2 weeks! this is ridiculous! when he went to apply he already had his EAD. he also took his passport. since he applied, we had our AOS interview, got approved and he now has his green card. it's just very aggravating because he has been offered a great job, accepted it and now they're waiting for him. have any of you waited this long for the ss card?

You can go back to the SSA with the I-551 card and have them run that through SAVE. Better chance of clearing SAVE with the I-551 card than with an EAD card. You do take a chance by doing that, because if the I-551 doesn't clear they have to send a G-845 with the I-551 card and the clock starts over.

The status/documents of all aliens must be verified before SSA will assign an SSN and/or issue a card.

The SSA office will try to verify his status through the SAVE system while he is in the office. If they can't, they will send a form G-845 to immigration for manual verification. This could delay the assigning

of an SSN and/or issuing a card for weeks and some times months.

If the SSA office does send the G-845, suggest that he go back to the SSA office no more than once a week with your documents to (1) ask them to check SAVE again (2) ask if they sent a G-845 (3) if yes, did it come

back (4) after 30 days ask if they have followed up on the G-845 by calling or sending another mark "second request."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After having waited at least 30 days and your local SSA office doesn't seem concerned about following up on the G-845 he can try contacting the SSA Regional Office (RO) responsible for your state:

http://www.ssa.gov/pressoffice/natlpocontacts.html

Refer them to this:

RM 00203.740 Requesting Additional (Manual) Verification By DHS

B. PROCEDURE – HOW TO REQUEST MANUAL VERIFICATION

STEP 6

DHS should respond to SSA within 15 federal work days after receiving the Form G-845. If DHS does not respond within 15 federal work days from the receipt of the G-845 from SSA, follow-up with the DHS, USCIS

Immigration Status office. (Allow 15 days plus five additional federal work days of mail time for the G-845 to be received at and returned from DHS.

Follow local practice to follow-up with DHS. Some SSA offices have an arrangement with the DHS, USCIS office to telephone for the follow-up contact; other SSA offices send a copy of the original G-845 annotated

“second request.”) If the DHS response is still not received within 15 federal work days after the follow-up contact (if the follow-up is by mail allow five additional federal work days of mail time for the G-845

to be received at and returned from DHS), make a second follow-up contact. If the DHS response is not received within 15 federal workdays (again, if the follow-up is by mail, allow five additional federal work

days of mail time for the G-845 to be received at and returned from DHS), after two follow-ups, contact the RO. Also report to the RO any trend that shows a serious deviation by DHS from the above time frames. The RO will consult with central office.

Hi There,

There are indescrepancies with the advice I have received from SSA. I applied for my SS card on Monday and was told to wait a few days before I could get a printout of my number.

I called SS on Thursday and asked if a printout of my number would be available and was told it would be at least 6 weeks before a number was assigned to me because that is how long it takes for SS to varify my status with USCIS.

I did not think this information was correct so I went to the SS office on Friday and received a printout of my SSN. I got home to find my SS card in the mailbox. Applied on Monday and got card on Friday, not 6 weeks.

If there is any point to this story it is not to take SS officers word as final, visits to the office will get you further than calling or waiting.

Best of luck!

Let me guess that the SSA 800# people are the ones that gave you the misinformation. For SSN applications only deal with the office where you applied unless you need to go over their heads to the Regional Office (RO) Calling the 800# is a waste of time.
