Dear Visa Journey members,

I was wondering if it is possible for me the US citizen to get any kind of welfare after I have brought my immigrant husband to America? I mean as long as the welfare was in my name and not his their wouldn't be any negative effects on our joint sponsor right?

And I am also wondering if anyone knows if the 5 year waiting period for medicaid is waived for underage immigrant children?

Thanks for your time!

Well I am not an expert at this but the I-864 is a contract between you and the US Government with you agreeing to provide support to your husband. If you co-sponsor fills out the I864 then he/she is making the same agreement. I would worry that receiving welfare is a violation of the I-864 agreement because if you can not even support yourself how can you support him? I am afraid they will question how can they be sure that any medicare money you receive was not used for him. I personally would not do it.
