Stupid customer service story

Yesterday at the restaurant my wife works at the owner was in a bit of a panic because the phone and credit card machine would work. She has 2 phone lines and wanted me to switch them so she could use CCs. I started to look into the problem and realised that the phone line was ripped out of telephone pole and was laying on the ground. Apparently a tall truck hit the line.

So the owner had me call the phone company for her and explain the problem.

me: a truck ripped the phone line off the pole

PC (phone company): did you test the second line?

me: a truck ripped the phone line off the pole

PC: did you test the second line?

me: a truck ripped the phone line off the pole

PC: did you test the second line?

me: a truck ripped the phone line off the pole

PC: did you test the second line?

me: yes, the 'second' line doesn't work either (sheesh)

blah blah... she asked me contact info and where the box was on the business etc

then..

PC: so neither phone line works at the business?

me: look.. the phone line has been completely ripped from the pole by a truck

PC: so neither phone line works at the business?

me: NO!!

We have our home listed with a real estate company. We drove by another home they have listed yesterday - a vacant house. We got curious and decided to run over to the real estate office and see if someone could go back over and let us in (our agent was out of town). I should mention it was a 5 minute drive back to the house we wanted to see.

They were all too busy.

Now let me see. If they sell my home they will make thousands of dollars. If they sell that home to me they will make thousands of dollars that they GET TO KEEP inhouse their listing/their sale.

And they were all too busy.

Yeah, I've called before to let them we had no signal after I saw someone working at some line at the pole. They kept on making me turn the router off and on then wait, then do it again. I told them I am not stupid to come over here and stop telling me to turn it off and on.

Oh I've got thousands but I can't remember all of them (too many stupid people). I work at a University an an advising office (help people pick out classes) and a girl just called wanting to talk to her advisor. I told her she's out to lunch and asked if she needed an appointment. The girl says no, she's just got a question. Often times I can answer these questions so I tell her to go ahead. She has questions about her grants and loans and if they will roll over to spring if she doesn't attend the fall semester. I tell her her advisor doesn't handle financial aid, she needs to call the financial aid dept. She goes "but I just want to know if it will roll over". I said again, her advisor does nothing with financial stuff, call financial aid. She gave me a tentative ok and hung up. Bad thing is she was a pretty easy one. Most students come in and I redirect them or tell them something they don't like (like they can't see their advisor THIS SECOND, they have to make an appointment, they hate that one) and I have to tell them four or five times before they will finally go away. Sometimes they call back a couple times to ask the same question/wait outside the door if they're in the office to catch the advisor when they walk out so they can ask them in person and get told the same freaking thing.

My laptop was broken and I knew it would be a while before I could fix it so there was no need for me to pay for internet since I couldn't use the computer. I called up the lovely people in India (AOL) and explained my situation and said I couldn't use the computer so there was no need to pay for internet. He responds by saying that he understood my problem and asked me...IF I WANTED TO SWITCH TO BROADBAND FOR JUST 14.99 a month!!

Me: Do you realize I just cancelled my delivery yesterday?

New Subscriptions: We can offer you a promotional rate of ... (cut them short with my next sentence...)

Me: I cancelled it because I don't want it delivered at any price.

New Subscriptions: Why did you cancel your subscription?

Me: Because I no longer wanted it delivered.

New Subscriptions: Was there something wrong with the service?

Me: Yes, it was being delivered and I didn't want it.

New Subscriptions: Have you considered taking the paper on Sunday only

I recently bought a computer and after having it only 90 days I came home and I could not turn it on, the power supply was bad. So I called customer service sent the computer is still under warranty. The person repeatedly tells me

Customer service: "CAN YOU TURN ON THE COMPUTER DO WE CAN TROUBLESHOOT?"

Me:Duh.................."uhhhhhhhhhhhh NO, the power supply is dead."

Customer service: "well ma'am, we cannot help you unless we can troubleshoot"

Me: "How am I supposed to turn on this computer when the power supply is out?"

Customer service: "Let's start by unplugging all the electricially supplies going to the computer"

Me: "No thanks, I know I know nothing about computers, but this is just crazy."

I hung up, called right back and got in touch with something that sent me a box out to send the computer back for repair. Some people you just have to wonder about. :blink:

We have been trying to cancel our phonelines for the last month since we are moving to Houston in 3 weeks....

Not a day goes by without my husband getting a phone call from the phone company to ask:

why are we cancelling

if we would like to have the cheapest tariff available

if we know anyone we can transfer the lines through

if we want a whole new deal with a whole new phone

Today it happened again, I asked hubby to tell them next time that WE ARE MOVING AND DON'T WANT ANYTHING MORE! And to please make sure to put it on their database and STOP CALLING!

I mean, how many calls it takes to understand that we won't be using the phones EVER again?

Not only that, they seem outraged at the fact that we don't want the service anymore and start being rudish towards us! How bad!!!

I am generally on the other side of the phone .. I do tech support for an internet service. It is true that some CSRs and TSRs are clueless, however most are not. I agree that in cancelling service some of them make it very difficult. I was once told that an AOL rep has to keep a customer on the phone for a minimum of 20 minutes before cancelling the service trying to talk them out of it. I don't know whether that is accurate of not. When it comes to technical support, the fact is that customers will lie about what they have done just to get a truck out to their home when most often it isnt needed. And sometimes they just dont wait long enough between the steps. Support reps also can run tests at various stages that can help the technician who it going out to know what type of problem it is, which will allow for it to be the right technician. It is generally easier for everyone if you just do the troubleshooting so the technician can get their readings etc ..
