My fiance and I are trying (as best as possible at the moment) to plan the wedding and honeymoon. We decided a simple, just the two of us, beach wedding and honeymoon was the best idea. I do know we have to stay in the US and as far as I can find out, the US Virgin Islands are considered US soil. Would leaving the mainland to the USVI be acceptable on a K1 visa? I've done the most research I can and wanted to know if anyone has had to figure this out before. Thank you so much for any insight.

Theoretically yes, but it's a weird thing anyway, as you are leaving US soil when flying over enemy territory. Thus, boarding in San Juan (Puerto Rico) and Charlotte Amalie (USVI) is a bit weird, as I can attest from first hand experience.

Keep in mind, a Brit can easily and without a visa fly to the BVI. From there he charters a sail boat and sails to the USVI. Happens every day. If he then could easily board a plane to the (US) mainland, we would have a hole in the fence that is bigger than Mexico.

Therefore, passport and visa controls are rather strict, and you might find it depressing to be treated like a terrorist. All that said, the Virgin Islands suck, BVI as much as USVI. It's like a third world country with suicidal drivers who drive on the wrong side of the road with the steering wheel again on the wrong side. Poverty is depressing, as is the humidity. Food is expensive, so life basically happens in the resorts. And, yes, without a rental car you are trapped.

My advise: choose Hawaii, more to the point Maui. It's the 50th State of the Union, and it's a fantastic, "must see" location that is truly enjoyable. Been there many times and my daughter got married there while on vacation as well. I would not trade 8 Virgins for one Hawaii. It's that good.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

better still, do a court wedding, and then fly out to do the beach ceremony!! You can even fly out same day or the next day!
