There is an official process to withdraw your petition. I would search VisaJourney or google for the appropriate way to withdraw.

the marriage turned south, is it too late to cancel the NVC application ? I wrote an email to NVC requesting a cancellation of the case, should that be enough ?

You'll be sending official letter of withdrawal to USCIS, NVC and the embassy/consulate in question. Email/fax, snail mail with delivery confirmation to cover your bases. Should also look into withdrawing Affidavit of Support.

going by your time line - it looks like Montreal has received your casefile.

If that's indeed the case, write a postal letter, withdrawing your DS-230, application for VISA.

A USC Spouse usually withdraws the I-130 and I-864, but you, as the foreign spouse, can request the DS-230 to be withdrawn.
