Yup, pretty easy to figure out, really.

I hate that I was "indoctrinated" into a religion before I had a choice in the matter. Mentally, I became a non-Christian long, long ago. The fears and attitudes that were instilled in me by that evil religion took much longer to excise.

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.

there is no way a true christian can believe in evolution. it contradicts the holy bible.

Spoken like a true fundamentalist ;) Millions of religious people the world over seem to have little or no problem balancing religion with science and celebrating scientific discoveries.

The idea that logic and reason should suddenly and inexplicably cease when faced with the bible is plainly ridiculous, and undermines the entirety of the scientific method. You can't believe in science and sorcery - its either one or the other.

Is that a no? So you don't think God is perfect and can do anything?

God created man in his own image.

Not to mention that the entire argument will be royally f*cked up in the event we discover an alien life form that looks entirely different to man.

lol.. Evo doesn't contradict the whole Bible at all.. again, I don't see the problem here with Christians (mainly protestants, because Catholics accept Evo as the origin of Universe) accepting Evolution...

I mean, Fukicng Stephen Hawking, the Lucasian Chair of Cambridge.. one of the smartest people in the whole world.. who looks for theories that can explain the Big Bang.. has no problem at all in believing that the origin of the universe can be thanks to a God.. so.. #######..

I know I know, the earth is hundreds of millions of years old, etc etc. What is carbon dating and how exactly does it "prove" that? How can anyone prove that the earth has been around for millions of years? You can't! Scientists simply cannot recreate that. They're basically guessing - so do you want to put your faith in men or God?

Yep but they are "guessing" using many different, unrelated methods, such as

  • expansion of the Universe
  • globular cluster age estimates
  • radioactive element dating

Surprisingly, all of these methods yield approximately the same age range for the Universe.

And yet you hear people saying that we should discard the empirical understanding (essentially, the evidence of our eyes). What does that suggest - that the scientific method is some sort of elaborate, self-deceiving lie?

When you can prove to me 100% that the big bang happened and evolution followed, I will believe you. Until then, we're just doing a lot of arguing back and forth. All I see when I read about the two subjects is "THOUGHT to have happened" and "COULD have happened" and "MIGHT be what occurred." Not good enough for me. Sorry, God/Bible wins.

Define 100%. Can I prove to you 100% that *I* exist until we meet in person?

And if we never meet, you will never believe I exist?

Spot on :thumbs::star:

Paul and I met on the Bazaar on the 14th January (he joined my progressive rock forum that day)

July 3rd he flew to England to meet me

We fell in love while he drove all over the place coz I cannot read maps (we were supposed to go to Ingleton - but touched Darlington 4 times, Pierce Bridge 6 times, Scotch Corner twice and Bernard Castle twice and we never did make it to Ingleton)

It has been so long and so much has happened in between...

Arrived in Houston on October 29th 2006

I think Brother Consolmagno, Vatican astronomer has got it right (well, except for the science needing religion part ;) ):

"Religion needs science to keep it away from superstition and keep it close to reality, to protect it from creationism, which at the end of the day is a kind of paganism - it's turning God into a nature god. And science needs religion in order to have a conscience, to know that, just because something is possible, it may not be a good thing to do."

Good point. That must mean the big bang happened.

I disagree.

Yeah, instead I should let the government fill their heads with scientific theories that can't even be 100% proven and call it fact. Nice.

You don't understand what a scientific theory is. A scientific theory can never be proven 100%. For example, Newton's Theory of Gravity isn't proven. Does that mean gravity will stop working and we'll all float away into space?

A scientific theory is the best available explanation for the facts we have. We know certain things about gravity, and Newton's laws best explain how it works. As more information is discovered, a theory can (and will) change. The theory of evolution has changed. Just 30 years ago the theory stated that evolution occurs slowly over thousands of years. But then new evidence was discovered showing evolution can (and does) occur very rapidly, over the course of hundreds or tens of years. The theory changed, and you didn't have "traditionalist" evolutionary scientists crying blasphemy.

Creationists take their dogma (Earth created 6,000 years ago, all life created and designed at the same time) and then tries to find evidence to support it, of which there is basically none. Scientists take the evidence at hand and find the best explanation. That's what science is.

It's really quite simple and logical, as one might think. We've figured out an enormous amount of things, and we're learning more all the time. If you want to step backward, you're not taking me or my (future) kids with you.

God is not perfect.

I disagree.

Your arguments do little to further your cause. I disagree is not good enough...

Tell me why if he is so perfect does he allow such hatred to be fostered in his name??? Why does he call himself vengeful, jealous, a god of wrath??? If I had a vengeful, jealous and angry person anywhere near me I would run a zillion miles... so tell me what is perfect about jealousy and vengeance for a start?
