Extra bag on return flight - pay the overcharge?

When my wife went to Thailand on British Airways they tagged her with a $60 charge for the second checked bag.

I never had any problem with a second bag flying on other airlines, but because we were in a rush neither of

us checked their allowances.

I told her to check with Fedex or DHL in Bangkok but she said they wanted to charge her over $300

so she'll just take the extra bag and pay the $60 fee.

Does anyone know of a shipper that charges less and is reliable?

I found out the hard way about shipping into Thailand. The initial shipping is nothing compared to the customs charges. They told me that I intended to sell what I brought & charged me incredible " taxes " on the items. They even tried to charge me for a forklift to move the little boxes. All of my things were personel & used that I doubt anyone would want even if I tried to sell them. Beware.

My wife would be shipping OUT of BKK because she is there now.

Sorry to hear about your story; they must assume that any Thai living

in the US must be doing some kind of import/export racket. Maybe

they had their hand out and you weren't playing that game. Have they

done that at the airport as well when you're flying in & out? I don't think

my wife had any problem when she returned for her current visit.

When in Thailand I asked her to get one thing, the British Dispensary

"Snake Powder" which I have become fond of. She bought 6 cans so

I hope they don't think it's cocaine on the US side, LOL.

Actually my husband, the USC wrote the responce. I didnt understand you were talking about sending things out. When we left Thailand we had no trouble with anything there or in the USA. No one even questioned us about content. My husband never had any problems at the airports in the 8 trips he made so far. The only trouble was as he said with shipping his personel things into Thailand when he moved there.

IC; so he had the problem at customs. I was just looking around for a company that shipped things OUT of

Thailand at a reasonable cost, but it may not be worth the bother.

I think if she's paying for the over-limit baggage fee on the way out she should ask the airline

first how much it will be and if she can pay in dollars or baht, as she has credit cards for both.

I'm not sure of British Airways policy, but every time I've flown (Korean Air, Thai Air, Singapore Air, United, Delta) they've allowed 2 checked bags @ 50 lbs each. If she was over the weight limit that might have inspired the 60 dollar fee. However, this is much, much, cheaper than sending anything FedEx, so I would take it for a song.

I order to get my wife here my brother, father, and I both took one of her bags, as we only brought one. We then shipped a bunch of stuff freight (you know, those giant gaudy portraits you have to do at wedding studio, etc), which came 2 months later and half of it was broken. This still cost about 100 bucks.

The SOLUTION:

BA is different from EVERY airline I've flown in the last 6 years.

They only allow 1 checked bag, $60 additional for another.

I found out online that if you pay by CREDIT CARD $48 for 2nd bag,

this is the only discount you'll get. I created a frequent flyer acct.

for her and logged in using her reservation number and

selected "additional bags." I paid with the joint credit card.

Much cheaper than having it shipped.

I already paid it and the 2nd bag was confirmed by email.

No I don't think so - $1,9115 RT to BKK which was the steepest I've ever paid.

We were waiting for her AP which arrived on a Thursday and we had to buy

the ticket right away for the following Monday - BA was the cheapeast available

fare for that day (which was the cheapest day taking Sunday, Monday & Tuesday

into account) which we bought on Friday. It would have been a ####### shoot

to wait until Sat. or Sun. to buy the ticket -maybe we could have got a lower price

but we had to have the bird in the hand on Friday for the flying on Monday!

I've flown United, ANA, Thai Airways & Emirates in the past to BKK and

never paid more than $1,100. I think the least I paid was around $800

from NYC.

The over-limit baggage charges (even at $60) are still cheaper than shipping them;

I had my wife check out those charges in BKK and they were ridiculously high.

If you look at the business logic of the airline, they want to squeeze as much

cash out of the passenger as they can without having him/her jump ship.
