Come on now... Pressure as a parent? That comes with the territory.

It's real simple and I was taught this as a kid, "No means no."

The argument, as I understand it, is that advertising at young demographics is extremely pervasive and that there is little a parent can do to reduce their children's exposure to it or their demand for those products. That doesn't mean the parent should cave to the child's demands - only that the advertising seeks to manipulate parents buying decisions through their children.

Quite simply, I don't understand why the reasoning should matter to you at all.

Well, lucky for both of us that you don't have to ;) But for the record, I've explained why reasoning matters, should you be so inclined to revisit my previous posts here.

It's not the gov'ts place to nanny people. They have a right to be ignorant. And going on your premise here, the gov't is going to stock its machines with 'healthy' alternatives, including diet sodas. So does that mean they are good for you????

As an aside:

http://www.huffingto...e_b_630549.html

That's my logic? You should read what I posted again, because I never said anything about "Diet foods". I said "Healthier options". There is a big difference. I know all about aspartame, so you are preaching to the choir here. We as a society have a right to be ignorant? Yeah, what amendment is that again? We have consumer protection agencies to protect us from harmful and deceptive foods.

Again, I point out that nobody is banning anything. The city is merely refusing to stock it's vending machines with ####### junk food. You are free to go to your favorite 7/11 and exercise your right to be ignorant and buy ding dongs and coca cola.

This really isn't an issue if you kick your kids off of the TV and stop letting that be a babysitter.

Send your kids outside to play. Get them kid magazines like Highlights, etc. Things that aren't filled with advertisements. Have them watch PBS Kids where there are no ads for anything other than PBS shows...

There's options out there that a parent can make their life easier should they ultiamtely choose to.

Don't place your kid in a situation where they are watching the Happy Meal commercial and demanding one from you. - Also you can just as easily go to McDonalds and pay $3 for the Happy Meal toy without the meal there if it's the whole toy thing.

There are always options that clear headed individuals could follow. It all comes down to how lazy you are really.

Advertising goes beyond the TV and magazines - a lot of it is on the internet now; and kids are exposed to it at friends homes and via peer pressure for schools. It's part of the same argument about the sexualisation of young girls and how even very young children are becoming increasingly materialistic.

This would be all fine and good if it were confined to just t.v. adverts. But it isn't, it is much more pervasive and it's unavoidable. Hence, your solution is moot.

I wasn't clear on whether they had banned all sodas or just the regular "full fat" ones.

Maybe they should have the "Insane Libertarian" row at the bottom, stocked full of the most fattening, disgusting #######. Just so they can say that they are providing choices to those who want it.

I survived the McDonalds and Lucky Charms ads as a kid... and even survived tobacco *gasp* and alcohol ads as well. Watched all the kids shows that had sugar food advertising.

Parents today are just flat-out lazy.

There's a different mentality in parents today versus the previous generation, the one before that, etc. I clearly saw the difference in the under-classes behind me when I was in high school and then have watche them gradually get worse over the years... It's not the advertising, it's not the culture, it's the parenting. It's the "my baby can do whatever he or she wants and no one is going to tell them otherwise, not even me" attitude...

Not fat, carbs, and evidently, not all carbs. Soda carbs bad, but fruit juice carbs okay. Cow milk carbs bad, but soy milk okay.
