It's the opposite. Nowadays, people are more aware of what kind of speech patterns make them look like f#gs.

Can you give an example?

An example of what I see a lot is places like a restaurant where someone or a small group of people are being overtly vulgar and loud, without any concern about the other patrons nearby.

Yup!

On VJ we have a varied amount of swingers, polyamorists, adulterers and so on. It's a mixed and varied bunch.

GOOOOOOOOOOOo VJ!

Oh good. I feel so much better knowing I can ask the kind of advice I want to!

Just no swearing, please.

Gemmie - I am with you on the C word. A word I never, ever use and find rather offensive.

What I find odd is that wearing is everywhere, part of many peoples common language. I definitely find it's a lot more common here than the UK for example- unless you've been to Glasgow or Belfast ;) yet it's hidden from your ears on TV like it's not even there. Ever tried to watch the Blues Brothers on TV?!

I don't get the whole need to swear all the time. When I do, I guess I do it for effect, since I don't normally. And never EVER in front of my mother. Except once when Giggs was fouled by someone who tried to stamp on his leg.

As for language in general. I know language is meant to be fluid and changes, but sometimes I think half the country speaks like a brattish teenager. I was like, she was like, I was like, they were like, like totally. Whatever! In response I would have to reply "so I was like, totally Hello?!"

Agreed. For example, if I'm in line at the grocery store and the 500 lb monster standing behind me insists on standing wayyyy too fu##ing close, am I better off saying "Excuse me, good sir, could you kindly give some space?" or "Yo, #######!! Back the hell up!"... the latter will yield results. The former will just make me look like a goddamn f#g.

Couldn't disagree more.

By going down to that level you are proving to him that you have little worth and so why should he wish to comply ?

If you act like a person of manners and consideration, then you automatically show that you are worthy of being treated well by him

It's a mistake to assume that someone with manners who doesn't use foul language is a nancy boy or a softy. Some of the toughest men I have ever met were very mild and respectful up to the point where they had to take more direct action and then these street kids who thought their foul mouth made them tough, found out that they weren't.
