I have a question regarding SSN.

I haven't applied for a SSN but I already filed for AOS (I have not received NOA 1 yet). We were going to apply for it when we get the work permit. However, because of the health insurance and joint bank account, I need my SSN as soon as possible. Is it possible to get SSN after filing for AOS? If so, should I get it under my maiden name? When I filed for AOS, I used my husband's name. Will that cause any kind of problem in getting a green card?

Thank you in advance!

I believe you can not apply for SSN now since you already filed for AOS. Once you get your EAD or GC you can apply.

Using your married name for the GC is not a problem.

Yes, you can apply for your SS.. need to have with you the marriage certificate and the passport.. I recommend to bring with you the AOS paper work as you may face some individuals that have no common sense.. Your SS card will be "restricted" [for work use only with EAD]. With GC in hands, you will need to return to the SS office and remove that condition..

Good luck

You can only apply for a SSN as long as you have more than 2 weeks remaining on the I-94. If you have less time remaining then they will not issue you with one and you will need to wait for EAD or GC

** moved from "Adjustment of Status (Green Card) from Family Based Visas" to " Working & Traveling During US Immigration" as this is relating to completing the EAD paperwork**
