Just getting ready to file I-485 and was wondering if I should fill out I-131 just in case I might need to travel back to home country to check on ailing mother? If granted request for certain time frame but no emergency I don't have to use form yes...no? And if granted can I use same granted form more than one time until interview for Green Card? Or would it be better just to file the I-485 and if an emergency comes up after filing said form then file a I-131 at that time for said emergency?

Thinking of taking a short cruise out of US for about a week to Caribbean Islands therefore would this present problem before filing I-485 or after filing I-485?

Thanks...

I-131 is fee waived with the I-485 so why not submit it... form use is not required and can be used multiple times...

Depending on the emergency... you might find the time delay to get it not to fit your travel needs so why not submit

Depending on what visa you arrived on.... if you depart the USA after your I-485 is submitted and BEFORE your I-131 or GC is approved, your I-485 will be denied as abandoned.... If you arrived on a K-1... if you leave at ANY time before the I-131 or GC is approved you will be denied re-entry

So will a short Caribbean cruise present a problem? In many situations, YES

YMMV

It never hurts to apply for advanced parole (AP)

Well..unless you've overstayed whichever status you're adjusting from/have had a period of unlawful presence.

Otherwies, you're good to go!

In the i-131 form there is a question (on page 3) that asks you if you will be using it for a single or multiple trips.

They will give you single of multiple use AP accordingly.

see the different boxes on the top on page 1 (in the space for USCIS use only)

If an emergency comes up before you get it, I believe you can make an infopass appointment and bring proof of the emergency and they stamp your passport.

Good luck!
