Here is a trivia tidbit for you - the new Canadian bills are also printed with braille on them for those who are blind so they can identify the denomination. Cool, eh? I like the new US bills - and I like the Susan B Anthony dollar coins as well:-). You don't need to 'memorize' colours - you just look at the number - but you won't accidentally give a $10 instead of a $1 by mistake as a hand-out to a street person, like my US husband did once:-) when they are differently coloured.

When Tim has been here, within a matter of weeks we will have nearly $30 in change stuck in a jar. Sometimes he would attempt to use it, so we would be standing at a register.....

Him: What is this one?

Me: A dime that is worth 10 cents

Him: Why is your 10p smaller than your 5p

Me: They aren't p's, they are dimes and nickles and I don't know why it is smaller

Him: What is this one?

Me: A quarter

Him: A quarter of a dollar, that is 25.

Me: chuckle, chuckle, giggle, giggle

Cashier: WTFFFFFFFFFFF

Him: grrrrrrr (grabs out bills instead)

A dime is smaller than a nickle because traditionally, a nickle was made from......nickle! Whereas a dime was made from silver. It takes less silver to equal 10 cents than it does nickle to equal 5 cents. Ergo, a dime was smaller than a nickle. That's the story I heard, at least.

Besides....he's one to freaking talk! The UK 2 pence piece is about the size of one of our quarters. It's huge! It's only 2 pence! And don't get me started on carrying around £1 coins.....

I've heard a lot of Brits say that our paper money is confusing because it's all the same size.... Didn't they teach "numbers" in the UK? Our bills say what they are all over them. Don't get me wrong, I agree that our bills are ugly, but good grief! Do you want the things to talk too, and announce that it is "5 quid!" when you remove it from your wallet?

:P

Yeah I see your point, But to be fair to the Brits, at least their bills are in different colours, so when you are drunk you are still able to differenciate one bill from the next. With ours its a ####### shoot...FFS I went to the casino once with my girlfriend. The casino is great for giving you free drinks while you gamble and of course they make sure that they are nice and strong so you get drunk quick...anyway, I was off my trolley...I went to tip the waitress and only meant to give her a dollar bill. Later, I went to grab a 20 for the slot machine...I HAD NONE LEFT!!! I was like #######??? I dumped my whole purse out....I only had like 4 one dollar bills left. I shook my head in disbelief when the penny dropped and I had realised what I had done!! My gf thought it was well funny...it explained why we got the same waitress everytime and why she bolted off like a bat out of hell after I tipped the ######...At least I made some starving family happy...(at least that is what I tell myself about the waitress to kind of ease the pain a bit)....BRING THE COLOURED BILLS TO THE US ANYTIME!!!!

Reminds me of my first visit to England. I snuck out to the shop alone and when I got back he acted so proud of me.

Him: Wow I am impressed, how did you pay?

Me: With money of course, DUH!

Him: Well I knew that but how did you get on with the coins?

Me:  I had the cashier count them out for me!!!!!!!!

I have always found these sort of things as some of the most interesting things we have handled together. It is nearly like being a child again, putting your trust in your partner, listening and learning from them. There are so many new things we learn when moving to the others country, it makes me feel happy, refreshed and a bit more open to learn or teach.

I do pretty well with English currency since I have been going for the past 14 years.

But I always end up having a heavy purse!

I've never done a change jar before, but a few months ago I decided to start collecting change to help pay for a wedding band for Chris.

I felt exactly the way you do Cian, but when I came back, I couldn't believe how incredibly flimsy our coins looked. Almost as if they were from a Monopoly game, lol.

As far as the money in different sizes, I have to say it's a great thing for someone who's blind. I dunno how they tell the diff here, but over there, the blind can tell what's what by the note's size.

Coriander:

The name coriander does not signify one thing -- it represents a seed, a leaf and a powder used in Central America, South America, all of Asia, the Mediterranean basin, the Southwest of the United States, and in any menu that replicates the flavors of one or all of these regions. Coriander-the-leaf is also known as Cilantro and Chinese Parsley. The profusion of names and forms are replicated in the range of flavors created by this coriander: the whole dried seeds are nutty and warm, the powder intense, the leaf vibrant or soapy -- depending on what camp the taster is in. In any form, though, when coriander is present, it is known.
