Long Layover at JFK

Dear all,

Bit of a peculiar question, but on our trip back to the UK later this year, we have a very, very long layover at JFK after our flight from Pittsburgh before we catch the red-eye flight over to the UK. We were hoping that we would be able to venture into the city for a while and visit the Big Apple before returning to the airport and boarding our flight.

Is this possible? Is it a security problem? What would happen to our luggage which would have been on our flight from Pittsburgh to JFK? Are there any left luggage lockers that we can put our carry ons into while we're in the city?

TIA,

Mark

I do not think your luggage can be removed after checking in for your flight at your origination, it is checked through to your final destination and remains in a secure area. We fly through Hawaii on our way back from Taiwan a lot and have a 10-11 hour layover and always get into the city then return, no problems at all.

Thanks, Mike. Do you ever leave carry-ons at the airport that you don't want to lug around the city?

You can leave your carry on at a luggage storage facility in the terminal.

From there you can take a cab to the city, they have set up a flat rate to Manhattan for the

cabs not sure if it's still in place. Keep in mind traffic can get crazy on the Van wyck expressway

so give yourself plenty of time to get back to the aiport and go through security.

You should be able to get into the city no problem, but for your return trip to the airport, I recommend taking one of the train options to avoid traffic. I believe taxis switch shifts in NYC at around 4pm (which makes it a little harder to flag one down) and if you're there on a Friday, expect the traffic to be terrible.

Cheers

If you have plenty of time, you can venture out in city.

If you are connecting at JFK, means your bags are checked thru to your final destination. You will not get your bags at JFK other then your carry on luggage.

Like someone mentioned you can even leave your carry on luggage at the facility, so you can move around the city freely.

If you keep your carry on with you, that could slow your movement around the city with added security everywhere after 9/11.

Good luck enjoy NY, its fun.
