nessaandcharles and galwayman,

Just to be clear, I (and the VJer who made the same suggestion a year earlier than I did) am not suggesting a divorce forum. I'm suggesting an immigration forum for people who are going through marriage-based immigration process when divorce has become a factor.

The idea is not to discuss divorce issues, it's to discuss the immigration issues that divorce creates and also to get those issues out of the other forums. Better that way for the people who do not want to be reading about the divorce-related issues (and the trolls and hijackers the issues may attract) as well as for the people who need help with those issues.

Yodrak

Visa Journey is a site for family immigration. I vote no.

How many trolls we've had saying they're going through divorce, or wives/husbands that come here whine after a fight with their spouse saying they're getting divorced, or they're canceling their visa petition or stopping the process and then they make up and come back and say ''oh it was just a misunderstanding everything is ok with us now''? Don't we have OT for this? Don't people always mock these people and hijack their threads for their own amusement? Are VJ memeber really going to start to respect those people if a Divorce forum is created?

I'm sure there are lots of forums specific for divorce, sites for it, and, most important: lawyers.

If people are really going through divorce, if the fiance(e) ran away, go seek legal advice, not post in a forum for strange people give you advice just because you're hurt and need to vent or you need sympathy. Don't these people have friends in real life they can talk to? Maybe a therapist? Maybe a priest?

I understand what yodrak suggested but still I believe this is a forum that supports USC bringing their family to the U.S.

Just my humble opinion

Yodrak what you say makes alot of sense but its up to the higher powers if an immigration forum is needed based on people going though a divorce. Thats why i said as long as there are strict guidelines ie we do not want to give the scammers tips on getting here to the US.

galwayman,

Don't we already do that in all the forums when we provide information on the requirements for the petition, the visa, the adjustment, and the removal of conditions?

"you need this ...", and "you need to do it this way ...." is just as useful to the scammers as it is to the sincere. No way around that, really, except to shut everything down.

Yodrak

.... we do not want to give the scammers tips on getting here to the US.

There is a need for information on what to do if and when the marriage does not work out. I have known MANY on this site and others that genuinely need to know what steps they need to take to protect themselves as the petitioner and those that helped them with support papers. It would be nice to have that information listed somewhere. Like on the bottom of the page where it posts the ICE number to report fraud. Maybe an entire forum isn't the answer, but the information should be available to someone who needs it.

I vote yes... divorce has a big impact on immigration - it brings up child-custody issues, and visa issues for the kids that have to be addressed and that a lot of people aren't even aware of until they're well under way (eg. having to get parental permission from the ex-partner to take their kids out of the country...) Then there's arranging visitation from half-way around the world, and child support...

And that's not even addressing the impact of divorce AFTER immigration. There's no point sticking your heads in the sand and pretending it doesn't happen, and when it does people need to know what to do, and they need to talk about it and how it will affect them, whether they're the USC or the immigrant.

Besides, maybe people wouldn't repeat the same questions so many times if they could see answers gathered together in a special place.

'Divorce' doesn't automatically equal scammers, trolls or trouble-makers...

(besides, if all that stuff is in ONE PLACE then the people who don't want to get into it don't have to read it!)

1. You don't think "there are long-time members who have divorced and would like some help with the immigration consequences" is a valid reason?

2. Funny, I thought this was an immigration site. Specifically, a site for people who immigrated to the US through marriage, to help them through the whole process. Sadly, for some people, that includes a divorce.

Frankly, I'm pretty tired of seeing the I-751 forum clogged up with those issues ... and especially of the people who have nothing better than to curse off posters for wanting to stay in the life they've made for themselves in the US than return to a country where they no longer have a home, a job, or in many cases friends or family.

I totally agree that there should be a divorce forum. It could help a lot of people. And it can also be a support network for people who choose to go back home to their respective countries, re-integrating there, etc...or even help with the legalities of staying in America.

Lets not have blinders people...yes, this is a marriage based site...but divorces DO happen, and to not address that seems pretty silly.

I will rephrase

I disagree with a divorce forum where the international couple has divorced and they want help with their divorce. If they post this as a topic in OT, then I have no problems with that.

I agree with a divorce forum where one of them has gotten divorced and are now marrying their foreign fiance. This does affect their immigration and thus would be a good idea.
