60 percent of Americans favor "additional government spending to create jobs and stimulate the economy."

When you have 47% of the population paying no federal taxes, is it any wonder that at least as many people support higher government spending (aka spending by somebody other than themselves) in order to help create jobs and stimulate the economy? Benefits which probably will effect those same people.

It's the same issue with the deficit. It's an invisible tax, just like inflation. Nobody sees it on their pay stub. Nobody says we're not going out to eat dinner this month because the deficit is larger. Credit card debt is visibly felt by the person in debt. Government debt is an invisible weight on the same person. Of course nobody supports the idea that individuals should max out their own credit cards in order to create jobs and stimulate the economy.

People need to start thinking for themselves rather than acting like some great statesman who is all for "the general benefit of society."......Society will figure it's own way to progress and do things. But when you have somebody who thinks that their idea should be mandated for the good of society, those measures will only work by making somebody else do something they don't want to do. Pay for something they don't want to buy. Or alternately not do what they want to do or not being able to buy something they would like to buy.

Cut the credit cards! We are no longer spending our children's money, or even our grandchildren's money. We are now spending our great-grandchildren's money. Stop the insanity!

They can go out and earn their own money.

If there is such a concern about children and grandchildren, then put the focus on the environment.

I'm sure that percentage will be lower next year.

I'd support a repeal if it means there is more money for stimulus.

Only an illiterate jerk off would support more 'stimulus' spending.

No more spending. PERIOD. The coffers are empty. tell people the truth.

You cannot spend that of which you do not have.

Paul businesses and the wealthy borrow to generate even more wealth. Why is this any different?

If you guys are goign to complain about spending, at least complain about the illegals I saw working on various federal projects around DC.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Surely there comes a point where the debts are so massive that you can't increase spending without plunging the country into a spiral of debt from which it will not soon recover. I'd say we're already at that point.

If you spend more than you have coming in and live on credit you're going to have to problems.

The country needs to borrow, to generate income, to get out of this mess. Cutting back alone is not going to fix the issue. You need to spend money to make money.

That said, there is a lot of wastage in the US, like counties running their own police, schools, fire etc. Something that is not only ridiculous but extremely bureaucratic and forces the duplication of so many jobs. Strange thing is that repubs support this and call it smaller government, yet turn around and then say governments equals waste. Therefore, the exact system [approach] they support, is the one which causes the greatest number of wastage, by means of duplication. It's the equivalent of a company having a separate head office in each and every county/city.

You can spot illegal immigrants by line of sight?

No it just must be another one of those Pike coincidences that all of them were Hispanic. As I have pointed out before, it's a 'where's Wally' game trying to find someone not Hispanic here doing manual labor. Still waiting on you guys to tell me which visa class they used to enter though. Before you say it, not speaking a word of English is usually the first sign that someone was most likely born abroad.

It's not only the US that is taking these measures to tackle the deficit.

How much do we borrow? If you borrow more than you can reasonably pay back, at some point you become bankrupt.

Sherlock Holmes would not approve of your deductive methods.

Can you prove their status? Heck, you guys have repetitively failed to tell me what visa they have used to enter, let alone prove anything.

Just strange that 15 million people are illegal, with the largest majority [like 4 out of 5] being latino, yet apparently it's just baseless to guess their status. Thus, the aforementioned question, which and what Visa did they use..
