I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.

I never submitted the whole system of my opinions to the creed of any party of men whatever in religion, in philosophy, in politics, or in anything else where I was capable of thinking for myself. Such an addiction is the last degradation of a free and moral agent. -Thomas Jefferson, letter to Francis Hopkinson, March 13, 1789

Oh, the irony!

If the present Congress errs in too much talking, how can it be otherwise in a body to which the people send 150 lawyers, whose trade it is to question everything, yield nothing, & talk by the hour? That 150 lawyers should do business together ought not to be expected.

the amusing thing about this, is the founders would be scoffing today at the rubbing they see in Washington on both sides of the aisle. They'd be disgusted at the fact that it became a two-party system and the size of the Federal government was so vast.

The worst thing they called each other back in those days was "party men" because they knew how detrimental it was to have political ideology rule the day. Regardless of what people like about the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution , we would not be where we are today if it weren't for compromise. Many had ideas, many had beefs with each others ideas, but at the end of the day they found a common ground of what worked and what gave governance for the people, by the people, while not inflicting a loss of liberty upon the people.

I think many politicians and people on both sides of the 'aisle' have lost sight of that today.

Jefferson must be rolling in his grave at what government has become. If you read the Declaration of Independence, our current government is quite similar to the one we were fighting to get away from back in 1776.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Senator Barack Obama
Senate Floor Speech on Public Debt

Not many people know this - but he is also purported to have said:

It doesn't hurt as much if you lean into it.

Yes, I saw that quotation too. I believe it was in "Sally and Tom: The Steamy Years", which I picked up at Barnes & Noble last week.
