From Liberty University's theological seminary, which was founded by the late radical televangelist Jerry Falwell. The seminary had found an effective and charismatic president, Ergun Caner, who'd become something of a star in fundamentalist circles. Part of Caner's success is a result of his personal backstory -- he claims to have been born in Turkey to a devout Sunni Muslim family, which made him a "jihadist." That Caner, an effective salesman, converted to evangelical Christianity gave him an interesting perspective. That he was able to present himself as both a Christian leader and an expert on Islam and terrorism made him a sought-after speaker on the religious right circuit.

But as it turns out, Ergun Caner has a Mark Kirk-like problem -- Caner's story was largely made up, and among other things, he was never "trained in Islamic jihad," as he's claimed. This week, the revelations cost him his job.

Liberty University said Friday that Ergun Caner would no longer be dean of its seminary, following an investigation into some of his claims about being raised as a Muslim.

Caner has signed a contract to be a member of the seminary's faculty next year, the university said in a statement Friday afternoon.

Four members of Liberty's Board of Trustees who conducted the investigation found that "Dr. Caner has made factual statements that are self-contradictory," the university said.

Even in religious right circles, bearing false witness will occasionally come with consequences.

You probably remember what happened next: Van Gogh was bicycling to work one morning in 2004 in the capital city of one of Europe's most peaceful and civilized countries when he was shot down in the street and then mutilated in a ritual fashion by an Islamist fanatic. The murderer (who had expected to become a martyr but who was only wounded in the leg by the gentle Dutch cops) left a long "martyr's letter" pinned to van Gogh's corpse by an equally long knife. In it, he warned Ayaan Hirsi Ali that she was the next target, and he gave a long and detailed account of all the offenses that would condemn her to an eternity in hell. (I noticed, reading this appalling screed when it was first published, that he obsessively referred to her as "Mrs. Hirshi Ali," as if trying to make her sound like a Jew. Other references to Jews in the text were even less tasteful.)

Sorry, but I fail to see how that mitigates the lies she used to gain popularity among Muslim haters. She knows nothing of Somalia and civil wars, she knows nothing of Islam, and nothing of the suffering she invented to gain asylum in the Netherlands. With her lack of any connections to the faith or any real injury from its malpractice, most likely used poor Mr. Van Gogh in the process of furthering her favorite cause - Ayaan Hirsi Magan. Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if she had something to do with Van Gogh's murder. Look at how far it propelled her career. Her entire story, the one that she still uses to give her "credibility" is a lie.

She left Somalia at age 7, never lived thru civil war, and doesn't know anything about Somalian Islam.

She pretended to be a refugee to get welfare and an education.

She wasn't forced into an arranged marriage, which is a claim she makes to show how abused she was by her family and husband.

In fact, she used her husband to pay her way out of Kenya to Europe, where she continued to lie and lie.

She wasn't a practicing Muslim and knows nothing about Islam, period.

She's fabricated everything that makes her a darling of the Right.

She undermines everything she says because everything she says is based on life experiences she hasn't had.

She has thrown her family under the bus and stepped over them to advance her own mythology.

She admits much of this about her, even as she continues to peddle them as facts.

If she has the ire of Muslims, she deserves it, as she has prostituted herself for fame and fortune on the backs of others, and a great faith. But, not to the extent that any physical harm should come to her in the name of Islam. There is no justification for that. Allah has His own plans for her, no doubt.
