Hey Everyone,

So I would like to attend school and as far as I learned from the uscis.gov side I can change my Status inside the US to become a Student as long as I didnt come as a Visa Waiver Crew Member. But regular Visa Waiver would allow me to Change my Status inside the US to a Student or would I always have to apply from my Home Country ?

My Second Question Would be, I have a Sponsor who would fill out my Support form for my Visa. I would need to know, what is the best amount to be supported with, that the Student is enough covered with it,.. And what kind of Proof should the Sponsor put within the Application?!

My Boy friend wants to sponsor my Stay while I am attending school, but I doubt that puttin in "Relation to the Petitioner" : "Boyfriend" is such a good Idea because the Alarm Bells will be going off. What is a legimite thing to put in there ?

Thank you

No, I don't think it is possible to change status to F-1 from visa waiver program.

WTs and WBs are inelligible for status changes from within the US.

You have to apply at a consular abroad, not necessarily home country but my DSO has always recommended it.

You need to be accepted to an academic institution first before you can start any visa process.

They will tell you the required amount to qualify for a visa. (usually one year's tuition plus living expenses - for example, mine last time was 29000 USD)

They will ask for a bank statement from your sponsor showing the amount, or if you get a scholarship, show the grant letter.

Not sure about boyfriend sponsoring.. might not be a good idea..

Once you provide this financial information, they will send you an I-20.

Without a valid I-20 you can't get a student visa.

My suggestion is if you want to start your studies soon and don't have quite enough funds to go to the school you want, apply to a community college. They are the more affordable option to get your studies rolling.

Then when you've got your finances more together you can apply and transfer to the school you want later ;)

I did the community college route for 2 years. Saved me and my mom lots of $$$!

Oh and incidentally if you are going for graduate school, depending on the field of your study you can find schools that will grant you TA or RA-ship (teaching assistant or research assistant) which usually waives the tuition requirements plus they give a (SMALL) stipend. And all this is counted towards your declaration of finances, but you have to do a little more leg work and the work load can be insane :bonk:

This is the route I went for masters because, lets face it, school is not cheap!

Good luck!

There is nothing wrong with getting an F-1 visa to be with a boyfriend. I spent 3 years in the US on an F-1 visa to be with a boyfriend. However, F-1 visas are non-immigrant visas which means you'll have to show how you intend to return to Germany once your studies are finished. This may be difficult if your boyfriend is sponsoring you - it may lead to more questions and perhaps a more difficult time obtaining the visa.

Engineer is right, you'll have to be accepted to the school and follow their requirements for financial sponsorship. Then follow this guide to change your status (if you are eligible)

Good luck

Trying to make anything non-suspicious is the quickest way to make something suspicious. Answer all the forms honestly and make sure you bring strong ties to Germany to clarify any non-immigrant qustions. If he is your boyfriend, then list boyfriend. Being as open and honest in this case is your best bet

Good luck

Attending a community college and boyfriend, uummm does not sound very convincing. First question consulate would ask is what is so special about this course that you are willing to travel to US, can you do a similar course in Germany?

If the answer is yes, then its difficult to convince the consular that your intent of travel is genuine, he / she would say you are just saying that you want to go and study but your real intent is to be with your boyfriend and then maybe even immigrate.

Why not get married and avoid all the hassle.
