Understood. i went in because of chronic lower abdominal pain. They took blood, x-rays, and a urine sample. 4 hours later the doctor walked in and said "I 'think' it s urinary tract infection". He gave me antibiotics, turned out it wasnt. So i now owe them 1500 bucks for nothing.

Sorry to hear that, Cristy. I checked into the hospital back in May with pneumonia and I think it was over $5,000, but thankfully Blue Cross HMO paid for it in full.

For my lymph node biopsy last year - costs were submitted to the insurance company for about $20,000! Even with insurance I still ended up paying $2000 out of pocket...

I just went for a broken collarbone.................I was in the ER for 2 hours, had 2 x-rays & got a sling.

The doctor billed my insurance for $185.00 and I never even saw him. I will have to pay about $800 out of pocket, but I believe the total was $2750.00. I have HORRIBLE health insurance........well correction "my company offers HORRIBLE health insurance".

it is a disgrace

I hope you're okay Cristy and feeling better!

Ugh, I'm sorry about that enormous bill. Medical costs in this country are immorally expensive. I recently read somewhere that more and more bankrupcies are being caused these days because of unpayable medical debt.

I can certainly sympathize. I am on the edge of my seat waiting to see what my recent hospital experience will cost us. Just over 2 weeks ago at ll pm I had a headache, and then in 5 minutes the whole right side of my body from foot to neck went numb and tingly. We went to ER (that is a nightmare story in itelf- don't believe that Canada has a worse emergency room record!) since I was exhibiting 3 of the 5 signs of a stroke! I was admitted and spent two days in hospital while they did CT scans, x rays, contrast MRIs. The good news is that they determined that I did not have a stroke - fortunately. Without a real diagnosis, though, I was released, still with all of the symptoms. My family doctor and chiropractor have since diagnosed pinched nerves and compromized circulatory system caused by a herniated disk. We have coverage, but I still don't know what our share of the bill will be since we haven't received it yet. The good news is that we won't have to pay the $75 emergency room co-pay that is charged if you aren't admitted! I am still undergoing treatment as I still have the symptoms, although not as bad as 2 weeks ago. I may have to have a nerve pathway test next week to determine the exact nerves being compromised. Sure wish I were in Canada when this happened too - although that might hae been a mixed blessing since the hospitals in my city didn't have access to an MRI.

We have BCBS HMO through my employer. I dread anything major, even though I only have to pay 10% (after the deductible is met). I'm having to have a few procedures done in the next few days so I'm a bit worried about the costs. But at least I HAVE insurance.

You belong to an HMO? With HMO's there's almost never any out of pocket - just co-pays.
