This is not a thread to discuss if, how, when or who's fault the Economic problem are or who is to blam for a depression.

This thread is not to discuss how the economy will recover.

This is not a OMFG we are all gonna die thread but a discussion on about how you plan to help your family survive a depression.

Do you have ideas to make money; if you do not have a job?

Are you or will you have a plan feed your family?

Things I have to help.

An old 6 bedroom farm house in Alabama on 10 acres.

2 hand crank generators

multiple manual and rechargable tools

I own a depedable car that is very low maintence and great on gas

Can raise a garden

lots of things I can do but if I lost my job I would need to pay off the 4 rentals and hope I could maintain the rent coming from them for income if needed.

I have done some really crappy menial jobs brfore and could do again

Plan to move my mother and 3 daughters and 2 grand kids in with me if needed.

lots of ideas out there.

I am hoping and have faith it will not get that bad if it does happen but one should be realistic and prepared.

having an actual skill that can be used when the world ends.

like:

medicine

art

construction

farming

not what most people do, which is an office job that won't help you when the world ends.

also will need a water cleaning and filtering system if you wanna survive.

If there's another Great Depression, the world won't end. That's silly and alarmist. Many office jobs will still be around. For example, there will still be IT jobs (although the workforce will likely be smaller) because information will continue to be a commodity, it will continue to drive efficiencies and it will continue to need storage and analysis.

So what am I doing right now to prep for the downtimes? Nothing different from what I've been doing for years. Working and saving.

Legacy member makes sense.

Both the Great Depression and the Long Depression were characterized by continued technological innovation and that will not change in near future even if the economy here deteriorates here overall. That is especially the case since a lot of the world (at least Latin America, SE Asia, China) are primed for continued strong growth.

So, working, saving, and investing savings in a diversified way will continue as a sound strategy. I doubt that retrenchment -- "back to farm" thinking -- which by its nature is *not* diversified deployment of savings, will be the beset idea for most.

While I agree with you both.

I do not intend to lose my job but in worse case scenario I could pull back to a place where the family could have shelter and have some sort of existance.

It may seem geeky but I collect any and all books I read o have read also intend to read.

Sounds like a guy who kept his Y2K generators for just such an emergency.

Even during the Great Depression there wasn't a complete collapse of American society. There wasn't much of social safety net back then but there were some charities and soup kitchens alng with a lot of people moving about looking for work and taking any job to survive. The government had some construction jobs but most people thought they were in the same boat so they didn't tear each other apart.

no never though of Y2k as a real threat

I purchased these thinigs at an auction and use them to recharge tools when in the field. They do have Batteries that could power lights or a refrigerator for a period of time. I am not sure how long the charge would last though to be honest.

I also have a 200 gal fuel tank on the property never really used it.

How much is a healthy kidney on the black market worth?

You going to sell a Retina or any other body part as well?

"The sky is falling, the sky is falling". Come on! We aren't heading into a depression. IMO, the difference in this RECESSION to others is the internet and sat TV is in full force so everyone hears about problems in other parts of the country as they happen and are bombarded by them 24/7 or whenever they turn on the puter or TV. We always have had our ups and downs. Want to buy a house? no difference in the requirements then 15/20 years ago. Good, steady income and 20% down. Thats what I was always told. Part of why I never bought one, but am looking now. Almost pulled the trigger a couple of times but I don't listen to salesmen. Finally bought my first new truck a few years ago. Saw what I wanted and asked for the best price. Was happy with what I got and signed. Told the salesman to leave me alone and let me look, I new what I wanted. Didn't need anyone pushing their opinions on me so they could make more money.

True, the economy is in a down turn. What I do is deffinatly effected by the economy. Last year was the worst in 12 years for me. This past year, though, is shaping to be my 3rd best in 10 years. I work as mate or captain on sportfishing boats to give an idea of what my buiseness is. Not exactly the best to be in during a RECESSION. but people are still using their boats. People are still fishing. Glad I'm not in the charter buisiness anymore as those opps are hurting, especially in the mid atlantic area. But that is because of how much one must charge, considering the average run is 45 to 60 miles out. The cost of fuel takes it above what the normal person can pay. However, in Hatteras, where youre not running very far, the boats are still moving. The marinas here in OC are near full. Yes, there are some empty slips, but more boats then there were here 10 years ago. People fail to realize how many new people got into it in the period from 99 through 08. Boat loans were going through like home mortgages. Today reminds me of the mid 90's---without the charters. Private boats are still fishing. Tournaments still have good turnouts and increasing payouts. Boat sales are down but in reality it's just that they were UP for the 10 year period from 98 through 08, just like home and car sales. Just a return to normal.

Sorry for no links, this is my OPINION---take it from what its worth. The sky aint falling and I have no more strategies in store then any other time in my life.

Thank you for the input but as mentioned we are not discussing whether it will happen or not in this thread.

Your opinion is respected but having no plan in place for any disaster is a disaster in itself; whether is economic, act of god or personal disaster.

I'm just exploring my options. Libertarianism wouldn't have it any other way.

The idea that everyone have the opportunity to either sell or purchase the body parts be equal and if not the government must make it so by supplementing the costs

To sell or purchase the body parts as ones individiual right with out interference from the government would be conserative

This is the problem most people who who do not fully understand that Libertarians try to take and abuse liberal ideas in effort to support their own individual rights

So Buscador are you a Libertarian?
