Do you NEED to file the I-131, or that is that just for if you need to leave the country before the green card has been awarded?

This is all so confusing! Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks VJ family!

Needed if you have an emergent travel requirement before the GC is approved

YMMV

It's not a required document no. BUT if you want/need to leave the US before your GC is approved, you would need to file for one or upon leaving the US without it (or a valid GC) you would be denied re-entry... well actually you might be allowed to re-enter the US but your AOS would be cancelled and you will go before an immigration judge, and pay all costs related thereto.

Please read the AOS thread in my signature. Applying for AP is NOT difficult and in my personal opinion should be done EVERY time with AOS. AOS isn't guaranteed to take a set length of time. one person just had theirs approved... after TWO years. Several others (many many others) have needed to urgently file it because something happened back home or something like that.

As the fee is waived, there's no harm in doing it. Like I said, check out the AOS thread in my signature. It has document lists and you'll see it's (AOS that is) not as painful as it seems.

** moved from "Adjustment of Status (Green Card) from Family Based Visas" to " Working & Traveling During US Immigration" as this is relating to obtaining an AP document prior to getting your GC**

It's not a required document to have unless you have plans of travelling while your application is pending. Do not even bother applying for it if you are an overstay for more than 180days. They won't let you back in.
