Confused about schooling and employment

My husband has recently received his permanent resident card and is now wanting to get a job. He's from England and never officially finished his schooling there. When applying for a job are they going to expect a high school diploma or GED or would they be lenient because he's got a green card. He is planning on getting his GED this year but would like something until then. Any info would be helpful thanks.

Honestly, no. They won't be lenient on him for having his green card. This economy is terrible and the competition is stiff for most any jobs. He'll be fighting being an immigrant with little education. Perhaps now is a good time to catch up on his education

He will apply for jobs that have certain requirements. Frankly, the High School Diploma, more so the GED, has no weight for certain jobs.

Of course he won't be able to apply for a job requiring a degree in higher education, but if he would want to work a blue collar job that requires muscle, strength, a good attitude, and a clean cut appearance, the High School Diploma won't do him much good anyway. If it comes to it, he could always state that he's fresh of the boat and has the British equivalent of a High School Diploma; I seriously doubt they 'll ask him for his British school report cards.

I second what has been stated before though: it's never too late to get more educated. Our parents and grandparents were born in a different world than our children are. Nowadays it's important to get a degree or certification in some field in order to make a decent living.

A sensible view of things overall, but a caveat regarding the quote -- lying on an employment application can be cause for immediate dismissal. Remote though the prospect might be, as Just Bob suggests, the chance is there -- and being terminated for lying will certainly prove to be a roadblock in finding subsequent employment.
