A couple weeks after my wife (then-fiancee) came to the United States, we went to to SSA to get a social security card. We were told to come back later as DHS had not updated their records. We went back two weeks later, and it still wasn't updated. We went back a week after that, and it was updated, but the card was never mailed to us, so we had to go back a fourth time before they finally mailed the thing.

Now my wife needs a new social security card, as her last name has changed. My question is this: do we have to wait another month for DHS to update its records to avoid getting another card that says "NOT VALID FOR EMPLOYMENT WITHOUT DHS AUTHORIZATION?" Or will we get a new, updated, "normal" card if we go now?

showing the GC should give a new "normal" SSN with the DHS part removed. The system should already be updated with her married name. It's should have taken a couple of months for the AOS to process, at which time the system was updated of course.

** moved from "Adjustment of Status (Green Card) from Family Based Visas" to General Immigration Related Discussion as this isn't an AOS question**
