Yes I noticed this as well. I think somewhere along the line US police deviated from their UK counterparts when they began to view themselves as non civilians. They took on more of a military approach to policing where as their UK counterparts see themselves as civil servants.

Its not just the UK, but all over Europe and much of the civilized world. The abuse attitude of far too many US cops is another example of American Exceptionalism, and one I'm not proud of.

Ignorance is bliss for some I suppose.

We understand how blissful it can be to ignore or play ognorant of the real issues but we would be happy to remove any ignorance of anyone if they would only listen and be honest with themselves.

We've had "interesting" experiences with the local police that lead us to conclude that the greatest threat to peaceable enjoyment of one's home by law-abiding citizens comes from police. Given her negative interactions with cops here -- where we were 100% innocent and aggrieved, BTW -- her attitude toward the new law in Arizona is, "I will never set foot in that state, cops have too much power in this country as it is." Can't say I blame her.

She draws strong constrasts between cops here and the experiences she's had back home: cops there have been uniformly decent, respectful, polite, and law-abiding. I've had some experiences with cops in her home country, too, that support the contrast.

Your loss. Arizona is better off without you.

Are you naive, or just plain ignorant? The law gives the police the impetus to stop people whom they suspect as being illegal immigrants. Even if it occured during a normal stop, the individual is compelled to prove his status or risk being taken to jail while they sort it out.

Federal law already gives cops the impetus to stop people they suspect of being illegal. They don't even need another reason to stop you and you don't have to be in Arizona to have that happen.

they want to get a head start on the outrage.

They've been outraged since 2004 . . .

this time.

I have traveled to Russia several times and personally noticed Russian cops hasseling non-Russians many times on the street and in the Metro. I have relatives that are Russian citizens and have visited them there. My cousins there told me this is common because many non-Russians are illegally in Russia from former soviet republics. They get harrassed because they don't look Russian. Racial profiling?

I find your comparison between American and Russian cops laughable. Russian cops openly beat the ####### out of criminal suspects with news cameras rolling. They are also well known for supplementing their incomes with shakedowns and bribes. I also find it laughable that your wife feels more free in Russia. Hell, you have to show your passport to even buy a friggin' train ticket over there. You have to have a residency permit (propiska) and an internal passport to do and get many things in Russia. Talk about..."your papers please." It ain't nowhere near as restrictive on that level here in the USA.

I find your fears about Arizona overblown and irrational.

If you have been harrassed by cops where you already live, moving to AZ might even be an improvement. Have you ever been there? So how would you know?

I've traveled to and through Arizona many times without problems.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

Its unlikely to be that one-sided. Every new opportunity I've taken in my career that led me to a new state also resulted in creation of 5-25 jobs requiring a college degree within 3 years of my arrival. I intend to do that again, maybe on a bigger scale. Arizona won't have the chance to enjoy that job creation. Some other state will, though. (And I've never hired anybody without quite thorough reference checks, because that's necessary in my line of work. I've never hired anyone undocumented.)

You're not unique, I do that, too. But maybe the president could use you. He sux on job creation.

How so? This is no different than some evangelical conservative political group advising its members about what movies and theme parks to boycott because they don't promote proper 'god fearing values'. OH wait, this is something you don't agree with, so clearly its some sort of nefarious endeavor.

Because enforcing immigration law is the same showing the directors cut of 'Free Willy'.

Give me a break.

If you are not breaking the Law, you have nothing to worry about from the Police.

If you are breaking the law, Speeding etc and you are not an Illegal you have nothing to worry about from the Police, other than a ticket of course.

My wife, who has a Green Card and would happily show it to the Police if asked, will be going to Arizona for just this reason.

Have not been to Arizona for 10 years, sounds like the riff raff are staying away.

I'll have to show Tbone this post lol.

You rang, si man?

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

I think it's time I plan a holiday to Arizona.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.
