He handles all of the finances here in Germany. He speaks the language, knows the ins and outs, and has had mostly everything established before I moved in two years ago.

I have very little knowledge of how much money we have on a day-to-day basis unless I ask.

I don't work, but I am a graduate student and will be for the next four years or so. I'll be getting a stipend soon.

In America, I'll probably start handling the finances... Or perhaps it will be a joint effort.

We do automatic bill pay for most things, so there's no managing involved really.

We usually have the family accountant do the taxes. My husband manages his stocks himself, I manage my savings and stock funds myself. We go through the credit cards and pay for the things we got ourselves and we split stuff that we buy for the house, or things like vacations.

If my husband had his way we'd put all the money into one bank account, but I think it makes us more responsible when we both have to track our own spending and relate it back to what we each earned.

We are also very careful never to owe any money on the credit card (unless it has a 0% interest level on it).

I am right now, because I'm working and because he's freshly off "the boat" and doesn't know the way of things here yet. However, I am THE WORST at finances/handling money/keeping track of money and especially SAVING money (typical Pisces ;)). So, eventually, I hope, my fiance' will step-in and make sure we don't get evicted because I spent all our money for the month on books, shoes and fancy outings.

I generally organize and keep track of the bills sent in by mail and remind him about payment dates. He pays the bills, mainly on line, and keeps me informed about what is paid, what isn't, what will be paid and when. He is really good about keeping me in the loop.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

We do online banking. We share in both the bill paying and the contributions (or he will when he's able to work). We discuss large purchases as well. As for spending money, we're both free to buy whatever as long as the bills are paid and the money is there. I hate writing checks so using the debit card and online banking is awesome! :)

I'm not even going to go there right now, I'll come back and explain later.

Let's just say it's a MAJOR source of marital disharmony.

In Brazil he paid the bills and I gave him half the rent in cash. If he forgot to pay on time he paid the late fees. The rest of our money we just shared. When he's here and we can get married, we'll keep sharing (with the "money is made to be spent" philosophy) but I believe conflict may arise when he wants to spend the money we have in different ways than I do.

We have never had more than "enough" before but with our combined income we may have an excess.

We are still operating separately at the moment.

Sian is a cytogeneticist and makes pretty good money. All of her bills are paid from her account automatically.

I'm a computer tech and make crappy money. (I saw $35,000/year mentioned as low.... that would be a very large raise for me) I've worked contract work the last 2 years, so I either had money or I didn't. As such, bills got a little out of hand for a while, and I'm still trying to catch back up.

Sian has never been in debt, so it can be a little stressful sometimes. I'm not actually "in debt" by American standards.... I have no mortgage or outrageous credit card bills....but I do have a few thousand dollars worth of bills and such that are past due. It's all part of the 'boom-and-bust' of being an I.T. contractor.

I have an interview next Friday for a better, permanent job. Really hoping I get it, as it will improve the financial situation greatly, as well as quality-of-life. (My current job with HP sucks. lol)

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.
