We were just getting together our AOS paperwork to send. Is it possible to apply for AP in case it is needed but not have a specific trip in mind for it? We had planned on applying as suggested in the guides, but the paperwork asks specifics so we didn't know what to do.

I'll have the same question in about 3 months, so I'm happy to see it now. My fiancee has a large family and therefore the odds of an emergency go up. We're worried about how long it will take, and in doing a little pre-prep, I noticed the question asking about specifics and wondered how to respond.

I just put down in case of emergancy to visit family and then listed some approximate dates for a trip. We had no problem being approved. I don´t think that they care so much about the dates if you don´t have a specific trip in mind. I would go ahead and file as there is no extra cost, and you never know when you might need it. Good luck!

I put "Possible medical emergency involving elderly grandparent" as one of my reasons for travel. If this is your only reason, you could almost certainly put "Unknown" for the date. I can't see them denying an AP application with this reasoning.

Come to think if it, I can't recall ever having heard of a denial of AP for any reason at all. [A good reason for denial would be if you had over 180 out-of-status days and using an AP document would get you locked out. But I don't think they deny APs even for that reason. They do warn you about the out-of-status thing, but I don't think they deny based on it.] I'm pretty sure any vaguely reasonable reason and date gets a pass here.

Yes. It is possible to apply for AP for those reasons. It's an "emergency" document really but people use it for holidays etc as well.

Writing "fake dates" is fraud. Writing anything but the truth on a document is fraud. While they have no way to prove your plans didn't change, I don't advising faking information. Write "unknown".

Just go ahead and file it. As what i did, i never put any answers in those question and leave it blank. No prob. I got my AP.

Try not to leave any spaces blank. While for the dates section it probably doesn't matter (from this example appears it didnt) but you don't want to get the one CO who decides it DOES matter and sends it back for you to complete every field. Like I said, write unknown.

i don't really understand why as a K1 you wrote a "reason". The document clearly states on page 2, part 3, just after Q3 to "SKIP TO PART 7 IF YOU ARE APPLYING FOR ADVANCED PAROLE"

Also as a K1 you do not attached a separate sheet explaining your reasons for travel. Page 4 of the I-131 instructions state that you need (a). a document from USCIS showing your current status (this is your K1 visa copy) AND(b) explanation that warrants issuance OR if you are applying for AOS, receipt from AOS (which as you are filing at the same TIME as AOS, is nothing).

---

So, quick answer, no don't need specific dates, just write "unknown"

** moved from "Adjustment of Status (Green Card) from Family Based Visas" to " Working & Traveling During US Immigration" as this is relating to an AP document**
