Obama, activists to push on immigration reform

By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama is enlisting activists and labor leaders in a push for comprehensive immigration legislation that will showcase Republican opposition and include a speech by the president.

The strategy was discussed during a meeting Monday by a range of prominent labor leaders and activist groups. Participants said Obama reiterated his support for immigration legislation but noted the political realities that have stalled it in Congress.

Latino leaders say they will work in coming months to pressure Republicans to give way and support an immigration bill - and make opponents pay at the ballot box if they don't.

"We're going to make absolutely crystal clear who's at fault here," said Eliseo Medina, a leader of the Service Employees International Union.

Prospects for passage of comprehensive immigration legislation look bleak this election year, and even many Democrats are wary of wading into the hot-button issue. But Obama, who pledged as a candidate to make immigration reform a top priority during his first year in office, faces pressure from the Hispanic community to act - or at least to try.

That's only intensified in the wake of Arizona's passage of a controversial law that requires police officers to question a person's immigration status if there's reason to suspect the person is in the country illegally. Obama has spoken out against the law and asked the Justice Department to examine its legality. Activists anticipate that the Justice Department will sue to overturn the law, but in Monday's meeting Obama said that decision would be left up to the department, and he didn't give a timeline, participants said.

The White House said Obama would deliver a speech soon on "the importance of passing comprehensive immigration reform" but didn't give more details.

Given the difficulties of achieving a comprehensive bill, participants said there was also discussion of attempting to pass smaller pieces of legislation - such as a bill focused on agricultural workers, or one that would help illegal immigrant youths attend college.

Obama is to meet Tuesday with Hispanic members of Congress.

The question of the day is ... at fault for what, exactly?

Don't the "activists" and labor leaders understand that between 60% and 70% of the American population (depending upon which poll you believe) oppose comprehensive immigration "reform"?

As for the promise to "make opponents pay at the ballot box", I have a feeling that it won't be opponents of this "reform" that will suffer in November. The numbers opposing "reform" and supporting securing our borders have been trending upward consistently, and the upcoming legal challenges to AZ SB 1070 will only keep America's attention focused on the issue. While it certainly won't be the only issue in people's minds in November, it will feature prominently.

Maybe then the administration will start listening to the people they're supposed to work for.

I

:wub: this woman! She has huges ones. I wish we could hang them on the Republicans in Congress.

wathc out it is like a game of chess Obama is manueveing

pawns (labor leaders illegal immigrant supporters etc.)

shuffling rooks(Economic sanctions; moratoriums and reforms);

Setting his knights to pounce (Czars for anything you can think of, or government offices to control any thing you can think of);

moving the queen (to take away any flavourful foods) so the bishops (his controled congress)

using the King he can checkmate the Amercican people with the propaganda he will spill out after shutting down the net and broadcast TVs so no one can broadcast the call to action in regards to the Immigration Reform vote.

American unions cannot be that stupid. Blue Collar yanks are the exact people that have been hit hardest by them.

Latino leaders can kiss my .....

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Why did you put quote marks around the word activist and reform? Are they fake activists? Is this an alleged reform? Is the sly Obama pulling a fast one on immigrants, calling it reform?

I have declared a war on unnecessary quotation of words. You can contribute to this war by mocking those who quote words needlessly.

I suspect America could get behind comprehensive immigration reform. Problem is that no such thing is on the table. What's on the table is more of the same type of amnesty legislation that we've tried time and again only to see the problem get more severe. That, Americans won't stand for.

Want to get reform done? Start with what's broken: Enforcement of the existing law. Then we look at and talk about what additional labor may be needed seasonally or whatever and put in place an efficient system to meet that demand. It's a simple approach that, in my opinion, would have huge support in this country.
