Recent and Imminent POEs

Our SSA office is within walking distance of where we live. My wife strolled over to the SSA again this morning, hoping to find a different officer who may know how to look her up based on A# or something.

However, she happened to get the same lady at the counter! This time she just took the filled out SSN application form and gave her a receipt. I'm not sure if she looked at the DOB certificate but my wife carried it, just in case.

We should get the number in a few days.

One more thing done then, sort of.

Hey everyone! It's been a little while. We've been busy getting settled and I also went back to work a couple of weeks ago and the start of a school year is always busy. Yesterday we were finally able to get the social security offices to apply for my husband's SSN and they said 7-10 business days and he'll receive it. Whoo hoo! It is no surprise that JFK didn't order it because they didn't give him a paper at all saying they did but the social security offices wouldn't do anything for 30 days. Coincidentally he also got his welcome to the USA letter yesterday. I have a question though because we logged into the USCIS site and it said something about background checks and a decision being made. Aren't they just working on his 2 year green card or is there more to it?

So the wife's POE was on July 26th. But we haven't received anything in the mail yet - No Welcome Letter, No SSN and No GC.

What's the deal with SSN? I see several people going to the SSN office after the POE. Wasn't it supposed to be issued automatically?

If we go to the SSN office now, what do we say? Do we apply for a new one? Or can they look up and tell us what number was issued to us?

I don't want to interrupt any processes that may already be going on, like USCIS talking to SSA.

But so many things are on hold till she gets the SSN. Drivers License, Health Insurance, Joint Bank Account, Amended Tax Return.

And we need her GC fast too, as we would like to travel to Europe before it gets cold!

Why, oh why does it take such a long time?

I'm sorry you're having the same troubles we did...and you're right about everything being on hold. Although I did call the bank and they said they would put my husband on the account without the number if he came in with me with ID. Anyway, we have been to the SS offices 3 times and made a few calls and basically the policy is that they will wait 30 days from POE before they will put the application in so as to avoid a person receiving two numbers. The only exception is if at the POE they do in fact apply and make a mistake and the person ends up on a list at the local SS office. We were not so "lucky". Saturday was our 30 day mark so we went to the offices again yesterday and they put in the application for us, no problem, and said my husband should receive his card in 7-10 business days. He received his welcome to the USA letter yesterday too and his POE was 7/22.

I dont know about the background check - seems like they're putting the cart in front of the horse, no? the SS thing is definitely an ordeal; congrats on getting the process initiated the 1st time. we have to go back for our 3rd time now, to get them to get her name right. but we did finally have our number and the card, so a name change is an acceptable annoyance (relatively speaking!)...

Today I got an email saying that my husband's green card production has been ordered so I think the whole background check thing was just a generic listing. It is the same one that was there when we were waiting on the NOA2. At any rate, it appears we are in the home stretch until we have to apply for his 10 year green card in a year and a half. Whew! It's so nice to be on this side of things at last!

He did not receive the informational book with the welcome letter. Does that come with the green card?

my guy didn't get the two jobs he got calls about (one was gone by the time he called)

but he started ESL so hopefully he can improve his english and get a job soon!

hmm no information booklet - just one letter from the uscis (looks like an NOA) saying welcome. it does have the SRC # which will be important for future refs. i think you're ok. it took 2 weeks from card production to actually receiving the card in the mail. keep checking your status - when it changes to the OS551a approved (see my sig), that's when they mail it out and then it shows up like 5-6 days later.

My husband received his SSN and card on Saturday...finally!! USCIS case was touched yesterday so maybe the GC is on the way too.

A quick update from me.

We went on vacation for a few days down south to New Orleans. When we came back on the 30th of August, to our delight, we found the GC, the SSN Card and the health insurance cards for her in our mailbox!

Now we go for the driver's licence in a few days and she is studying for it diligently.

awesome congrats! we will be going back today (take advantage of the early work closings) to get my wife's name change in the SS card...then we go do the same thing with the wonderful indian embassy with her indian passport too...
