I'm cooking in the kitchen and listening to people's music/media links they post on the facebook news feed. A friend in Hungary post this song and I'm feeling Sinatra today!

This is beautiful Aya! heart.gif It brought dh all the way downstairs asking me, "Who's that? You're listening to (enter name I don't recognize)? Who is that singer? She's not the singer for that song. She's singing someone else's song. Ect... then come details on that person. I don't recognize that girls name. That's not an Arabic name." laughing.gif

/exit husband back up the stairs.

This song is ancient. The melody is Turkish/Ottoman. The Lyrics is in standard Arabic (some of it is too ancient that you need a dictionary to understand). The singer is Syrian from an Armenian origin, her name is Lena Chamammyan. There are SO MANY versions of this song, most of them are in Arabic and Turkish and Armenian.

Or in Spanish: Radio Tarifa.

Waleed was explaining all the details of this new video for the Egyptian revolution to me. They really put a lot of work into. It even has English subtitles with the Arabic.

It's a follow up to their original song made during the revolution also in collaborations with several artists.

And this one is about Tahrir Square

This little girl is like the Shirley Temple of the Egyptian Classical Cinema. Her name is Fayrouz. She only worked in the industry for 6 years and made around 10 movies.

This song comes from one of her movies with several musical scenes in it. The music starts at about a minute in and then pauses for dialogue and resumes at a minute thirty. After some dancing she begins singing at around 1:50.

There is no translation here but she sings about having a quarter and all the things they are going to buy with their quarter. Then they lose the quarter and she suggests they pawn the pocket watch.

In this cute funny one she sings a song about how she is going to divide the cheese and make it equal because she is fair. She shows that one side is bigger than the other so she starts eating the bigger cheese to make it equal but then the other cheese becomes bigger and she starts eating that one.

The full movie is on Youtube. There are a lot of full classical movies like this on youtube that I wish I could watch with a translation.

I heard an interview on the radio with this guy, Ibrahim Mallouf, this morning. He seems really good. He's a trumpeter and composer from Lebanon living in France. He is noted for playing Arab music with quarter tones on the trumpet. I thought that was interesting and beautiful. His music is a mixture. Maybe some of you have heard of him before or know some of the songs from somewhere else?

His official website

The trumpet starts around 2:28 in the above clip.

Trumpet starts at 1:28 in the above clip but I like the feel of the whole piece.

Alaa Wardi is a singer/songwriter, composer, musician and audio engineer. He is Iranian but was born and raised in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. His videos have gone viral before in the MENA region.

This first song is a cover of Amr Diab's "Wa7ashteny

He's done something to the video so you'll have to follow the link. He's really talented and clever.

Here are two other examples of his work that appear to play in the article of his viral videos that I linked.
