Attempts to hijack a Qatar Airways plane have been foiled, according to the Al Jazeera TV network.

The flight was reportedly heading to the Qatari capital Doha from Jordan's capital, Amman.

Jordanian airport officials said a man tried to force his way into cockpit.

Ok, the story has been updated with the following:

"Just after takeoff, one of the passengers moved towards the cockpit and, when one of the flight attendants stood in his way, he hit him (the attendant)," passenger Samir Samri told Al Jazeera by telephone.

He said the man appeared to be about 20 and from an African country.

"It might not have been a hijack attempt," he said.

Mr Samri said the man had been detained and the plane had returned to Amman minutes after taking off.

Nizzy,

Well now they're saying it may not have been a hijack attempt at all.

Keep me updated because I really want to know. On a trip recently I took American Airlines (crappy flight) and there was an Indian gentlemen next to me who was getting the eye from a lot of people. It didn't help that he had two lap tops with him (he was taking one to his brother in India). Well we had a stop in London and he wanted to use the washroom and asked if I could watch his bags. I agreed without thinking (we were talking the whole way and he was a nice guy). Well two seconds later these troops swarmed in because the bags were left there and they were asking me all sorts of questions. The guys told me never to watch bags for ANYONE and you better believe that's advice I will surely take.

Update: Qatari Airlines scare not terror-related

A fight between a passenger and flight attendants on a Qatari Airlines plane sparked a hijacking scare Thursday, prompting the plane to return to Amman on a day of increased tensions on flights after a foiled terror plot in Britain.

The passenger, an Eritrean man, screamed and pushed an attendant after being told he could not leave his seat to use the bathroom, a Jordanian government spokesman said.

Initial reports from Jordanian airport security officials said the Eritrean was carrying a canister with a liquid in it as he tried to force his way into the cockpit.

But government spokesman Nasser Judeh told The Associated Press that it "was a quarrel and not a hijacking attempt" and that the liquid was a medicine.
