Oh yeah, that's the other thing about conservatives. They are the regular Americans. The people they don't like are mere interlopers. Not real Americans. Not like they are.

I think you refer to them as "fly-over country".

The douchebags are everywhere, I'm afraid. Even on the coasts. Look in the mirror and you'll see an example.

"We believe that the best of America is not all in Washington, D.C. We believe" -- here the audience interrupted Palin with applause and cheers -- "We believe that the best of America is in these small towns that we get to visit, and in these wonderful little pockets of what I call the real America, being here with all of you hard working very patriotic, um, very, um, pro-America areas of this great nation. This is where we find the kindness and the goodness and the courage of everyday Americans. Those who are running our factories and teaching our kids and growing our food and are fighting our wars for us. Those who are protecting us in uniform. Those who are protecting the virtues of freedom."

Mr. Big Dog, perhaps you would like to indicate why you think this article is incorrect.

Because the Founders of this country were - in the broader international context - in many ways precisely what the author believes Americans reject: Progressives.

That all depends on how you define progressive. I think there are few who would deny that they created progress. But in the modern sense, where a progressive is someone who believes that government should get bigger and have more influence in people's lives, I see little evidence to call the founders progressives. They created one of the smallest and non-controlling governments of their time. How can you argue that the founders were for big government?

Exactly. Progressives are about progress. And the founders of this country pursued exactly that. Progress then was different than progress now but it is hard to argue that the founders would have wanted this nation to stand in the way of progress rather than driving it.

Progressives support what you call "big government" when it can used to help our fellow citizens. They do, however, support what you call "limited government" when it is appropriate. A good example is in the areas of keeping government out of the bedroom. Another good example is in the area of general progressive opposition to a national ID. Another good example is in the area of Internet freedom. Note that on the last 2 of those examples, this President is actually in opposition to the progressive grassroots that phonebanked for him and walked for him, siding with the corporatists who funded him instead.

Wait a minute...

So you slap a label on me because I believe:

Most "entitlement programs" are wasteful and should be dissolved or at least have limits put on them.

The way to fix the "healthcare crisis" in America is to address the rising costs ($500 for a Tylenol at the ER) instead of implement Socialized Healthcare.

The way to fix illegal immigration is to shutdown the gravy train for illegals by: putting companies who hire them out of business and requiring proof of legal presence for anyone to qualify for government provided services (such as food stamps, welfare, section 8 housing, public education, drivers license etc).

Here's the only label I will wear: AMERICAN...

I've made the choice to work ####### jobs for low wages to support my family.

I've bought cheap because I couldn't afford better.

I'm making good money now and as a result can afford a larger house & nice car. If you don't put forth the effort I have then He11 no you don't deserve the large house & nice car I have.

For that matter, most people don't depend on the government for day to day life. Local, State, or federal. Unless you realize that your mail is being delivered by the federal government, the paved road beside your house was made by all three levels of government, that check book you are holding is maintained by government which created the environment for banks to exists and to actually give you services. Not screw you over.

I am so sick and tired of anti-govenmentalism among so many people. If you don't want government, then why don't you just freaking move to Antarctica. I'm not telling this to anyone specific here. But to everyone who always moan about government: anarchist sons of corn grazers.

Word. But rather than Antarctica, Somalia would be agood place for the anti-government crowd. Go and have a look at what a paradise grows when you eliminate the government. They've done that over a decade ago and are now the sort of 'you're on your own' country that many here want to have. Me? Not so much.
