Greeting to all-

Just a brief background on my situation. I've met my wonderful Colombian g/f here in Chicago this past February. She was in the state as part of the 2 yr Aupair program and was a nanny staying with the host family. Her two years was up in April so she had to go back to Colombia. We had already fallen in love and really wants to get married so we can settle down here in the US. I think it would be easier for us to get married in the US but we would had to wait another 2 years so she can re-apply for the Aupair program again since that is the rule. She can't just come back to the US right at this moment because she is not wealthy enough to apply for a tourist or a student visa and we don't want to wait two more years.

So what option do I (or her) have left? She wants me to come visit her this September and hopefully get married. She believes this is the only option and I'm willing to go through it,though I'm very nervous about going to another country that I'm not familiar with. She had already talk with the Notary in her city of Paipai and had discussed with me on how to go about this. Wow, this isn't going to be easy and its gonna take a lot of time. I already know what I need to bring per the Notary's request. A passport, birth-certificate and a letter proof stating that I'm a single man. Here's the problem. I'm Asian and was not born in the US though I've been a US citizen for 20yrs. By the way I'm 33 and she's 25. So basically, I do not have a US birth certificate. Can someone please tell me what replacement documents should I bring? A US citizenship card or maybe a US social security card? I've tried searching over the internet but no luck. Also how long does it take to get your documents translated and apostilled and where can I get these done at?

I know this is just the initial step and I have a long way to go but I need to start now which is the reason why I joined this forum. If anyone had gone through the situation I'm in now, please let me know of your experience or advices you can give me.

Thanks for listening!

It sounds like she has a 2-year requirement to stay at her home country. Is that why you said she has to wait 2 years? Check her visa to see if this is true. If it is true, then there is one extra thing you have to do for her to be able come here if you don't want to wait 2 years. You have to get a waiver for that 2 year rule.

As far as documentation to prove citizenship, certificate of naturalization and US passport are acceptable alternatives.

When I got my docs translated took about 1 or 2 weeks including mailing.

And then since you are planning on getting married in her country, you will need to do the CR-1 process for her.

Good luck!

To clarify. Its not a requirement for her to live in her home country for 2 years, but its the term for the program that she joined called Aupair. Its a domestic work program that does not involve her country, but its an alternative and less hassel way of entering the US and stay their for two yrs for whatever reason(improve language skills, help with host family,work...etc). After 2 years is up, they can't stay in the US anymore and can re-joined the program again in another two years. Like I said the aupair program is the only way she can stay in the US but her term is already up. Hope that make sense.

A couple of more question if you don't mind.

Does the passport needs to be translated as apostilled as well? Also, where can I get a letter of proof that I'm single and not married?

Thanks again
